Attention all Labor and Delivery nurses. A pt just reported that she has lost her mucous plug (at 28 weeks) and if they can't find it, her physician will have to induce her at 32 weeks. So, if anyone finds an extra lying around, please let us know, we want to do anything that we can to prevent a preterm baby!!!!!!
Also wondering, is it possible to have a mucous plug transplant????

OH NO not the mucus plug:)
I had a patients husband call and discribe the patients mucus plug for me. he told me they were walking in walmart when it fell out, described it as brown sticky and tastes sweet. he offered to bring it in for me to look at and test for my self if it was the mucous plug or not.
he taught me something new. mucous plugs taste sweet :) according to a book he read.
well i don't know about you ,but i am not up to tasting them myself:) what about you?

I lost mine without knowing it. My friend called me one day and said, "My mucus plug fell out." WTH? She asked me if I wanted to see it b/c she saved it. WTH? She was all excited b/c she thought she'd be going into labor soon....well, if you count 15 days soon...

We had one patient show up at the desk one day. I asked what brought her in. (shoulda asked what SHE BROUGHT IN, turns out).
She proceeded to SHOW me her mucus plug, tucked neatly and safely in a nice little jar ---sweeeeeet. She says " well here it is, and I am due today, so I am here to have my baby"....ummmmm.............btw she did not go on to deliver for almost 2 weeks. it was.....interesting, to say the least.:roll

I had a friend call me at work on Thanksgiving day all excited, " My sister-in-law just lost her mucus plug!!! What do we do!!???" I said "First of all remember you went to med school? You're a pediatrician?? Then go eat turkey and let me get back to work!!!" People just lose their heads when things start oozing out of the nether regions, I guess.
Whenever a pt calls or comes in to tell me that they lost their mucous plug, I usually say "Ok, stop and think for a minute. Where was the last place that you had it??" I don't know why, but I get a kick out of that everytime, I guess that it is just my warped sense of humor!!!
