Going to be starting OB clinicals soon, just wondered what I need to pack in my bag for clinicals? Basically, any additional items that you found helpful or necessary during your OB clinicals. Thanks!

I didn't need anything different from my other clinicals:
I pack light for clinicals though.

For my OB rotation, everything was provided, but you could bring your pen light.
We were not to use our own stethoscopes (there was one for the newborn hung on the crib, and we were to use that for the momma too, it's an infection control thing).
Good luck! :)

the stetheoscopes do kind of stink but your not suppose to use your own for infection control reasons on the newborns and there are ones for mothers if needed, but generally you do not assess lung are heart on postpartum moms. I just finished mine, its a lot of fun. Good luck

i waaaayyy over packed for my ob clinicals. half of the stuff that i crammed into my pockets i ended up not needing. guess i was too used to med/surg clinical setting. i brought my stethoscope (of course), black pen and pen light. that was about it.
i personally found ob to be very boring. if there isn't a mom in labor and about to deliver, then there is a lot of sitting around to do. i always managed to go into the newborn nursery and hold babies :) definitely the best part of ob clinicals.

i am a believer in being prepared for anything, so i bring (and use) these things:
- black pen
- colored pen (i use this for report so that i can tell the difference between what happened in the previous shift and what happened during my shift)
- highlighter (for things that i need to monitor or be cautious of or that need to be done during my shift)
- bandage scissors (this is more of a postpartum thing when removing bands from mom and baby)
- black sharpie (to black out names and mr#'s when antibiotics or pb need to be disposed of)
- thorough report sheet
- i fill one of my pockets with alcohol wipes when i get to work for cleaning my stethoscope between patients (we don't use different stethoscopes for each patient) and for cleaning iv ports for pushes and pbs)
- a waterproof watch with a seconds.
good luck! and have fun!
wow! lots of great ideas! Thanks a bunch!!
