Oakland Community College nursing program

Published

I've been lurking around here for awhile and I'm wondering if anyone else is starting the OCC nursing program in Sept. like me!

I already have my schedule and (most of) my books, but I'm wondering about what other supplies to get that may be useful. (Do you know when our "uniforms" and MedSurg book will be available?)

Also, is there any A&P, chem, or nutrition coursework I should study up on to help me out first semester?

Thanks!

I'm suprised that I don't know anyone starting the program this semester... You'd think I'd at least recognize one person from my A&P, chem, nutrition, etc... bummer. eh, at least I get to make new friends!

Maybe we should form a study group or something once class/ lab really gets going. :)

I'm sorry I spelled his/her name wrong. But you know who I am talking about. Do you have him/her?

And I am sure I will have a lot to talk to you about another student once school starts! :imbar

One professor is very serious about wanting depth to her prep points. I had her last year for OB and I would sometimes have 6 and 7 pages of written prep points just to get those 3 points. Almost half of the class did not have the required amount of prep points (75%). They had to do an extra assignment to be able to pass the class. So just be forewarned that she requires alot.

By the way, what type of green is the uniform? Hunter green, Winter green, snot green :rotfl: Just kidding. How do you like them?

By the way, I hope both of you are coming to the Luncheon next Monday. Sit and try and talk with some second year students. They have lots of pointers to share.

Our uniforms are the same colors as the green in the OCC catalog, its a dark green. I like them because they won't get so dirty all the time. I almost forgot about the luncheon. What goes on at these luncheon? And also are you in the NSA? If so, how much time do you have to spend to participate? I am interested because I heard it gives you extra points towards your grade if you participated.

I have also wanted to comment about the prep points. I have already started and some questions are only single sentence answers. What do she expect from you then?

We usually have a guest speaker. Sometimes it is interesting sometimes not. We also give alot of information regarding upcoming events and/or any changes in the program. The first luncheon is good to get to know people. Last year we had pizza. There was also a uniform company there (doesn't apply this year). We did a few raffles. But mainly it was welcoming the first years and getting info.

We all are members of the NSA. It is included in your tuition. However, not everyone is active. I am on the Break thru to Nursing Committee. I go to each meeting monthly. That is only about an hour and yes you receive one bonus point for attending. It is not a whole lot of time that needs to be dedicated. But it is good for the resume and good for networking.

Hope to see you there.

Hi Love4Me! I was just wondering about the calculation test. I took pharmacology in the Summer of 04'. We basically learned the drug ratio and proportion, formula method and IV formulas. We never went over pediatric and any other math that I hear so much about. Was I taught everything I need to know in school? Or was this just because we had this class in the summer. I am worried that I won't be prepared for the test we get next semester in calculations. Oh by the way, I had Sallee.

We would like to ask that professors not be discussed by name on the main board - you may PM information, but since the site is searchable by google, we would rather err on the side of protecting folks' privacy. Thank you! :)

PLEASE!!! Do not mention your instructors, or other people by name. This is a very widely read bulletin board. How would you feel if you got to class and the instructor you named called you on it?

Please be careful!! Thanks.

Hi Dream. I also took Pharm in the summer of 2004. Had the same instructor and she is great. Pharm covers everything you need to know for the calculations test. However, they only go over it briefly. It is a good idea to do lots of practice calculations until you feel comfortable with it. The exam is multiple choice and 20 questions. It really is not difficult. OCC has a link on its website that has lots of practice questions. Let me see if I can find that link for you.

Hope that link works. If not, go to the occ website, click on the "campus" link. Click on Highland Lakes. Then click the department "individualized Instruction Center". On the left side of the page click on "nursing page". Scroll down to the very bottom "nursing student", and choose a practice test to download.

Hope that helps you.

This was what I was looking for. I have been so worried that it was something I didn't learn and this website that you gave me really helped. Now I know what to study for. Thank you

Where is the nursing program at OCC? Highland Lakes or Southfield?
