Oakland Community College nursing program

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I've been lurking around here for awhile and I'm wondering if anyone else is starting the OCC nursing program in Sept. like me!

I already have my schedule and (most of) my books, but I'm wondering about what other supplies to get that may be useful. (Do you know when our "uniforms" and MedSurg book will be available?)

Also, is there any A&P, chem, or nutrition coursework I should study up on to help me out first semester?

Thanks!

Hello RNKate. I am also a student at OCC. However I am a second year student.

You can purchase your uniform any time you like. Just go to your local uniform store and get the dorkiest looking all white :rotfl: I am just kidding about the dorkiest part. You won't actually need the uniform until mid October though. As far as the med-surg book, I am not sure when it will be available at the bookstore. For us it became available toward the middle of fundamentals; however, I had exhausted all of my funds and decided not to purchase it until Med/Surg. And I did just fine without it.

I bought a stethoscope and a BP cuff early in the first semester. I had a phobia about not being able to take a BP. A pen light and a pair of scissors (both can be purchased at the bookstore for under $10). I also purchased a nursing clipboard. It has nursing info on it and a calculator at the top. Some instructors will let you take it into your patients room with your assessment sheet others will not.

Other than that, I would say just use the books that they recommend and get ready to study your brain into a know. :D

As far as the studying up goes: A&P came back to me naturally as we went over it, Chem wasn't that big that you need to reaquaint yourself with it, and nutrition is just the normal stuff.

I would suggest enjoying these last days relaxing 'cuz once the ride starts your "relaxing time" will be vary limited.

Congradulations Kate and Good Luck!!!!

Maybe I will see you around campus sometime

Hello, I am also starting in September this year and I am very excited. As far as uniforms you know our uniforms must be ordered through the bookstore, and our prep points are included in our lecture syllabus. I have been reading a lot of threads about the calculations test, I am very nervous about that, but other than that I have started my reading and prep points for lecture and lab. Thanks to my mentor, I have started early so I can get ahead of the class. Okay I am going to venture through some other topics, good luck this year! :wink2:

Uniforms for OCC can be purchased from any uniform shop (at least last year and they haven't told us any different for this year). I have bought them online and from local stores but never the bookstore. The patches that must be sown onto the arm and the name badges are purchased from the bookstore.

And just so you are forewarned, the prep points are NOT ALWAYS included in the syllabus. There are a few classes that you have to purchase them separate. But it is alway nice when they come together.

Best of Luck to you

Hey there! Thanks for your suggestions! I don't know if I should tell you this... but we have different uniforms than the students last year. I guess they did away with the "all white" motif so we get to wear green this year (thank god!)

Also, what do you mean about "purchasing" prep points?

Any advice on specific teachers?

Are you by chance a T/W lab?

I can't wait to see what the green uniforms look like :D

With some of the classes you have to purchase a syllabus and then there is a separate booklet that looks like the syllabus, but it is the prep points. I can't remember but I don't think that starts until you finish fundamentals.

Try to get close to a few people that seem like they are serious about school. It always helps to have a buddy or two that you can rely on when you need help or can't make it to class. You are not in this alone.

August 1st was the first-year student's orientation. And this year uniforms are to be purchased only at the book store, for uniformity. They are not white anymore, they are Green! And as for the prep points for Foundations of Nursing 1710, they are located in the syllabus this year and the questions are in the study guide book. This information you can get at the book store. I am only registered to take one class this semester because I took Pharmacology in the Summer, so I am ahead in few chapters of my prep points in lecture and my study questions in my lab book, (as my mentor told me to do). Thanks :)

I'm suprised that I don't know anyone starting the program this semester... You'd think I'd at least recognize one person from my A&P, chem, nutrition, etc... bummer. eh, at least I get to make new friends!

Maybe we should form a study group or something once class/ lab really gets going. :)
