Hi everyone! I'm applying for the NYU Spring 2015 ABSN program and haven't been able to find any threads about the program yet. Feel free to post questions you have or to share information about the program, your personal stats, advice for writing the personal statement or just to say hi. Here's to speedy acceptances and a fun future in nursing! :)
My Stats:
Just graduated from Brooklyn College with a B.S. in Psychology and an overall GPA of 3.38
Got an A in almost all the pre-reqs, don't know the pre-req GPA
Volunteered as an EMT for 4 years and worked for 2 years
Worked as a Direct Care Worker for 1 year
Volunteer in Methodist Hospital in the Stepdown Unit
Hey Petrichor and Spaceshuttleboy,
I'm also looking into going for CRNA as well. I applied to NYU but I got accepted to Creighton University which is a 12 month program and starts this January. I would be done with the BSN 5 months earlier than NYU. Not to mention the program is about 20K cheaper. Do either of you know if CRNA schools care about which BSN program you went to or is it more about grades. I am currently from NYC and I know that NYU has a great reputation but it's so tempting to go for the 12 month program in Omaha plus they offered me scholarship money. I would really appreciate any input either one of you guys might have on the matter.
Hey. I also got accepted to a school in Massachusetts that starts this January. It has a great NCLEX pass rate and it's loads cheaper than NYU so I've been inclining lately towards going, though I'm still curious to hear from NYU. I've been speaking with some CRNAs and nurses at the hospital where I work, and they have all unanimously said that it doesn't matter where you study for your BSN as long as it is a BSN and that you're able to maintain a high GPA. The CRNA schools are looking principally at your grades and your ICU experience while you're a nurse. I be been thinking it's wise to go to a school that doesn't leave you heavily indebted, especially if you'll have to pay for CRNA school afterwards.
Hey,
Thanks for the response. I'm waiting to see what NYU says but like you I'm heavily inclining to the lower tuition. As for the ICU experience I know someone who can help me get a job when I'm done back in NYC in an ICU. I've heard that the loans at NYU can add up pretty easily to 100K and considering we're going to have to pay for grad school it's not such a great deal. I also know someone who's at NYU and in regards to the GPA its pretty hard to maintain above a 3.5 because the classes are really big and its hard to get your questions answered during office hours. I'm glad that the grad schools don't look at the school that you attended, this is a relief so again thank you spaceshuttleboy.
I agree with Spaceshuttleboy, your grades are more important than where you went to school. Although I will say that the quality of the program plays a significant role too. My Aunt is a CRNA, and she said that while your grades are important, you do want to make sure you do a lot of research on the school that you choose to attend.
Have any of you heard anything about the quality of NYU's ABSN program? I have heard mixed reviews...
I agree, it is super expensive and I would rather put my money towards grad school than undergrad (especially since this is a second bachelors degree and I already have debt from my first one). But it would be nice to see what NYU has to say.
Hey Petrichor,
As for the quality of the ABSN, I've also heard mixed reviews. I know someone who teaches at NYU for the nursing program and from what she said its no different from the other ABSN programs that she teaches at in NYC. According to her, the class will start with about 200-250 but its only about 150-170 of those that actually graduate. I don't know if that helps.
Yup, I agree. I mean, we will have *some* debt on graduating, but little debt is better than big debt. It would be nice to say we went to a highly selective prestigious school, but essentially what matters is passing the NCLEX, and many schools besides NYU prepare you for that. In a hospital, no one asks where you studied.
Thanks for the congrats petrichor
@spaceshuttleboy. yup that's true in the end it doesn't matter where you go to school, but the NCLEX but that the school is accredited. However, name can still be important somewhat. In some Asian cultures, the first thing we do is ask a healthcare professional where he/she went to school. If used right, the name can get an interview, first job, or some connections though.

Yep. Also going to become a CRNA. I haven't looked into CRNA programs yet since the first step is to actually get into a nursing school. But I'll be working towards acquiring some ICU experience in the years after graduation, though.
