Hi everyone! I'm applying for the NYU Spring 2015 ABSN program and haven't been able to find any threads about the program yet. Feel free to post questions you have or to share information about the program, your personal stats, advice for writing the personal statement or just to say hi. Here's to speedy acceptances and a fun future in nursing! :)
My Stats:
Just graduated from Brooklyn College with a B.S. in Psychology and an overall GPA of 3.38
Got an A in almost all the pre-reqs, don't know the pre-req GPA
Volunteered as an EMT for 4 years and worked for 2 years
Worked as a Direct Care Worker for 1 year
Volunteer in Methodist Hospital in the Stepdown Unit
Wait, if you are a female -- and you are -- you wouldn't be a doctor? I don't think that's a solid reason to be (or not be) anything. I could easily be a doctor, as could you possibly. But males can also be competent nurses. Nurses train doctors, so being a nurse doesn't diminish the importance of their role in health care. To be a doctor, you'd have to have decided right after pre-school and do everything right. I decided to do other things with life. But fortunately there are accelerated degrees like these that allow you to change your career path without forfeiting too much time. Being a doctor now would require at least 10 years of my life, where as as nurse I can begin my health care career now, and be somewhere else - who knows where? - in the same time med school would take. I'm not sure being a male nurse is an unusual thing now. It's still uncommon, true. But, I can imagine that for many patients, it would be a relief seeing a health care worker that is the same gender as they are, since it could play a little part in encouraging them to be comfortable in receiving care.
Hey spaceshuttleboy. Congrats on getting accepted! There's a great group on NYC called Men In Nursing. Lots of students and professionals are in the group. You can find them on fb. It seems like you might really enjoy it!
As for being a doctor or nurse, gender has nothing to do with it. As a female, I was sad to see the comments from Lagirl. Nurses are definitely not bossed around by doctors. They are two completely separate professions. Also, there are more females than males in med school right now. It's great to see females breaking down the boundaries and going into a field that used to be male dominated. Unfortunately, we haven't seen the same thing happen for men in nursing. But we definitely need to encourage our male colleagues to join us in the great profession of nursing! Being a nurse is an amazing career and I'd love young men to know that they have the same opportunity to have a successful career in nursing as women do!
didn't find out todayi really hope i find out Thursday... I applied by October 1st but because my LOR was lost so many times and didn't get delivered till the end of October I think thats whats keeping me from finding out... I can't take this level of stress much longer

Hi everyone!
I received the acceptance email yesterday around 11 am. I live on the east coast. To everyone still waiting on a notification-I hope you all get in!
NYU was my top choice and I'm so relieved to know the decision. I'm a little worried about affording the NYU program, hopefully they offer a decent financial aid package. In the email, they said that we would receive the notification about financial aid in about a week. I hope that helps anyone else waiting on news about financial aid.
Is there a Facebook group for the spring program?
