NYU Spring 2015 ABSN

Published

Hi everyone! I'm applying for the NYU Spring 2015 ABSN program and haven't been able to find any threads about the program yet. Feel free to post questions you have or to share information about the program, your personal stats, advice for writing the personal statement or just to say hi. Here's to speedy acceptances and a fun future in nursing! :)

My Stats:

Just graduated from Brooklyn College with a B.S. in Psychology and an overall GPA of 3.38

Got an A in almost all the pre-reqs, don't know the pre-req GPA

Volunteered as an EMT for 4 years and worked for 2 years

Worked as a Direct Care Worker for 1 year

Volunteer in Methodist Hospital in the Stepdown Unit

Congrats to those accepted. Where else did you apply? Also what time in the morning did your hear?

Did anyone get a rejection yet?

to all: i'm working on my supplemental app for nursing. did you all just type directly in word, pdf, or handwrite it? thanks

@spaceshuttleboy. i believe you also applied to JHU, are you withdrawing or still going to be in applicant pool

This is a complicated part of the decision. JHU is higher ranked (#!) but the won't let me know until February, and the program doesn't begin until summer. I give up NYU and remain as a candidate for JHU, but I might not even get in. Bird in the hand, two in the bushes. I might hold my spot at NYU for now by paying the deposit, and continue celebrating. Let's see what happens when financial aid notifications come around.

I typed it in. I doubt it matters.

@ spaceshuttleboy. that is a very smart choice. i thought about doing that for nyu but i don't have developmental psych completed. how do you feel about being a guy in nursing? i am a female but if i were a guy i would become a doctor.

Spaceshuttleboy

I hear you on the decision process, I think in the long run that choosing NYU would be a better choice. While I'm not a fan of choosing things because of the name, I do believe that if you want to go on to pursue graduate education that having a more prestigious name on your resume would take you a lot further.

This is true, I believe. I'd like to go into research and advanced practice nursing afterwards, so I think it would be great to have that reputation to accompany you. I recently read an article that NYU grads are among those considered by hospitals to be the most desirable. Probably that would set the wheels in motion for getting a proper hospital job afterwards? I'm excited!

Wait, if you are a female -- and you are -- you wouldn't be a doctor? I don't think that's a solid reason to be (or not be) anything. I could easily be a doctor, as could you possibly. But males can also be competent nurses. Nurses train doctors, so being a nurse doesn't diminish the importance of their role in health care. To be a doctor, you'd have to have decided right after pre-school and do everything right. I decided to do other things with life. But fortunately there are accelerated degrees like these that allow you to change your career path without forfeiting too much time. Being a doctor now would require at least 10 years of my life, where as as nurse I can begin my health care career now, and be somewhere else - who knows where? - in the same time med school would take. I'm not sure being a male nurse is an unusual thing now. It's still uncommon, true. But, I can imagine that for many patients, it would be a relief seeing a health care worker that is the same gender as they are, since it could play a little part in encouraging them to be comfortable in receiving care.

@ spaceshuttleboy. i do believe it depends from person to person. i choose nursing over medicine so i can have a fulfilling career and a family life at the same time. male nurses can make a difference, some male patients prefer male nurses. but how does a guy feel if he is "ordered around" by a doctor? no insult intended. i have met male nurses who are very bitter.

For those of you who got good news today -- congratulations! To everyone else waiting -- good luck!

I'm wondering if anyone who applied to the program took any of their prerequisite courses as an ONLINE course OR a HYBRID course (where 1/2 the class is online, and the other is in-person). I have to sign up for my Microbiolo gy course tomorrow, and it looks like the in-person classes are almost filled, but there is a hybrid course offered where the lab is in-person, and the lecture is online.

I emailed NYU and they said that "Prerequisite courses taken in a classroom setting will be more competitive than prerequisite courses taken online. You may certainly take microbiology online if that is your only option. The only course we do not accept online is Chemistry." I really don't want to hurt my chances on getting in by taking a hyrbid course if that will make me less competitive... Any thoughts/advice from anyone who applied/has already heard back??

Thanks!!

I got my acceptance letter today. Hope a lot more people get in

What time did you receive your acceptance? @learning4nursing
