NYU hiring process

Hello I recently applied for a position at NYU, they sent me an email recently saying to complete an online questionnaire or assessment tool. Is that a good sign? Do I have a good chance of hearing back?

@DWinNY There's one place in the city and if you google it they should come up. I heard that people had more luck finding scrubs in Queens and Brooklyn. I bought mine at Life Uniform in Garden City. Of course allheart.com is a go-to site for a lot of people too but I couldn't justify the shipping cost and I wanted to try some on before I bought them.

Nice info in here. So I need some insight myself. I was interviewed in early November and the week after my interview I received an email informally offering me the job pending reference check, background, and physical. I input my references and heard nothing within the week. Emailed my recruiter and was told I wouldn't be starting in 3 weeks like previously stated but that the unit will still hire me and that I would be waitlisted and she would get back to me soon. 5 weeks later still nothing I emailed her and it seems she also doesn't have any status updates from the hiring manager. I'm like freaking out, what takes so long all I have left to do is my physical/background check? I was told my references looked great and all I was waiting for was hiring manager to get approval for position?

I'm trying to stay calm as that NMs are busy at the end of the year and I guess hospitals fiscal years are closing out around now? But..... What is the holdup? Sigh

@DWinNY - I bought my scrubs online from Allheart.com / Medisave.net. If you must try on Scrubs, there's a store close to the hospital on 2nd ave between...between 24th and 25th (i believe)

Work is a process. Coworkers are great. I'd had various preceptors, some great..some just ok. It's a struggle learning everything and learning all the different protocols of the hospital. But all in all I'm getting there :)

@All4nursingRN. Some units have high turnover rates and thus always have positions open, others barely have positions open cause the nurses always stay. Things are fluid and can change at a moment's notice. NM are also very busy at this time with evaluations and other end of the year commitments. I would just keep being persistent with Nurse Recruitment. Maybe the NM will OK the hire soon, or perhaps Nurse recruitment could forward you to another NM for another interview if it doesn't work out.

Thanks bionic, the thing is they told methe shift I would be working and everything, plus the hiring manager said that the unit is expanding and needs more people. They asked how soon I could start and it seems the NM wanted to squeeze me into the next orientation which would have been a tight squeeze timewise, i then got an email saying i was offered the position, then all of a sudden I was told my hire date was on hold and that I was ''waitlisted''

Are u saying maybe a nurse was leaving and decided to stay so the position isn't available anymore? Wouldn't they be upfront and just say the position isn't available anymore?

I'm assuming wait list status means they'll call u for a start date soon within 6 weeks because I don't believe hospitals think prospective employees will hang around waiting to be called for a start date for months and months.

Also did I mention my recruitment and interview process went so fast and so well (I was never formally interviewed only told about benefits and orientation layout and unit tour)

@All4NursingRN .. It's a possibility someone on that unit stayed or transfer got delayed. There could be budget issues that arose for that particular unit. It could be any number of things. I'm not a manager (yet :) )so i don't know the ins and outs of hiring. I know some of my coworkers who got hired and started with me on my unit also had issues with being waitlisted/ or having their start date pushed back. It might just be unit specific.

All i can say is stay persistent. Follow up with the manager if you have his/her contact information or with the folks at nurse recruitment.

It seems most of the new grads said that their interview/recruitment process wasn't all that bad. The experienced nurses on the other hand... very different.

Thanks bionic, I'm have 7 years experience and my recruitment process went unexpectedly well and fast except for this waitlist thing. Someone did say that if it was a no go they wouldve told me weeks ago. I just hope so.

has anyone had any success applying for and getting an interview with NYU from out of state? were you a new grad? did you have a NY license?

I just accepted an offer at NYU langone. This thread was extremely helpful in getting me through the entire process. Posts by BionicRN, DWinNY, sc128 and others kept me in the hunt. I am going to give back by writing about my own timeline. I hope I can motivate others.

I graduated this past May with absolutely zero prior healthcare working experience. I have been applying to NYU since graduation, because of the Nurse Residency program, magnet status etc. Pretty much my dream job. The first objective here is to schedule a face to face interview appointment at the recruitment office. Per the residency, if you have a 3.5 gpa or better, you apply to any and ALL open staff nurse positions on the website, and keep applying, calling recruitment office at the number on the website, until you get called in or sent the online assessment (career battery test). The express method is watch out for every upcoming NYU open house. Attend one of those and be ready to sell yourself in less than 2 minutes to a talent acquisition specialist, recruitment coordinator or the Dir. of Recruitment. Just secure that first face to face interview at recruitment office!

Back to my timeline. I applied for a bunch of open positions in early October and attended an open house in mid october. I got sent an online assessment (second step in application process) Oct 26th. I am not sure if online assessment was sent per my applications or dropping off my resume at open house. Anyway I submitted it online same day but didn't hear back. I attended a random job fair a couple days later and a recruiter at the NYU booth told me to call the office (remember what I said earlier? Call them as much as you can to keep tabs!) to follow up. Not everyone receives a message saying they "passed" that online assessment, also called the career battery test. I followed the recruiter's advice and called Nov 3rd. The administrative assistant picked up and set up an appointment for me to come write a dosage cal test and interview with a recruiter on Nov 12th (Achieved that first primary objective!). You must get 100% on this dosage calc test (15 basic multiple choice questions) to be eligible for employment. After the test, I met and interviewed with the recruiter. I was asked "Why Nursing?", asked about my accelerated BSN program and then provided comprehensive information about the nurse residency program (compensation, benefits, tuition remission / reimbursement etc). While the interview / discussion was going on, she was trying to contact Nurse Managers with open unit positions to set up an interview for me same day. Luckily or unluckily, no one was open that day. A week later, Nov 19th, I called in to check with the administrative assistant about an update on availability of Nurse Managers. Later that day, I received an email with an appointment to interview with Nurse Manager. I went in Nov 24th, interview took exactly 27 minutes, panel interview with manager and assistant. Your regular nursing interview questions "Tell me about a difficult patient scenario", "Strengths/Weaknesses".. I was also given a post op patient scenario and asked about how I would care for the patient. I wasn't given a tour of the unit. I was told to stay in touch with recruitment. This afternoon, exactly one week since my interview with the manager last week Monday, I received a phone call offer from recruitment. On to a bunch of paperwork starting tomorrow!

This detailed timeline is dedicated to all prospective new grads and current new grads in the job hunt. Don't you ever let someone tell you "there are no jobs for new grads, you don't have CNA experience etc". Stay super persistent, God's time is the best! I couldn't even get into a Nursing home with my BSN and GPA, but I kept applying. And for current student nurses, start the process early, attend open houses, network and keep those grades up so you are competitive when you graduate. NYU would be having monthly orientations starting next year, so I expect more people to be called in for interviews for this residency program. Good luck! Any questions, let me know.

P.S: I took a visiting RN per diem job a few months back to stay active and keep honing my skills. I believe it greatly helped my Resume a lot as a new grad and at my interview, I answered questions based on those patients and not clinical rotations. If you are in the NYC area, check craigslist daily. You can also apply to a company called Horizon Healthcare Staffing. I believe you can get a visiting nurse position as a new grad with them.

I have been applying a lot but still no answer :(. do you have any tips? should i be calling the recruiter inquiring about my application status everyday? I have not heard anything and I'm nervous I did not get anything. Thank for your help!

KEEP APPLYING! Make sure you don't STOP APPLYING. Orientation started 3 days ago for me and I can tell you they still have Mother/Baby positions to fill. KEEP APPLYING, call the recruitment office, don't feel like you are being a hassle. Call and follow up on status of your application. I am not sure if you are a new grad or not, but if you are, do you have at least a 3.5 gpa?
