Nyu Accelerated BSN spring 2014

Published

Hello everyone! I made this thread in order to find everyone is also also planning on applying NYU accelerated nursing program. The application for the spring opens on October 1st and I am so excited! :)

Hey @cookiedotes,

I decided that I am going to Rutgers University. I personally learn better in smaller programs, so I know that NYU won't be the best place for me.

Did you decide?

I thought I'm weird to think that way coz NYU is a big school but I also chose class of 35 people instead to actually get hands on things... Uph I'm happy I'm not alone

In response to Ramboramerez11

It's worst in the West coast than it is here, I have many colleagues there that are still looking for jobs. Revisit my post 6 months after you obtain your license and tell how much the "west coast is thriving and the demand for RN's are like no other." All of you new nursing students are in for a rude awaking after you graduate. I'm not trying to scare you guys off but that is the job market right now and it's everywhere! Btw, living in lower manhattan is a rip off, it's disgusting and dirty. Go to brooklyn or queens and commute, you'll get more for your money.

I agree. Your money, your investment, it's best to choose the program you think you'll do best in. Not weird, trust me!

Best of luck!! :)

Cool BrokeNurseNYU it makes sense, but your attitude can be infectious and I don't appreciate you dumping your negativity and depression on the students whom are excited to start the program. Im sure your research on nursing jobs on the west coast is extensive. Get your masters with your free time, If you posted that 6 months ago, you could already be 1/4th of the way done. No one ever said your guaranteed a job. I have 3 friends who have an ADN, not a BSN, are newly hired and working full time. You must not be looking hard enough.

I plan on moving to Brooklyn or the LES. There are great deals out there, finding the right one with a view is key.

My only concern is winter. I hate being cold.

omg. rutgers was actually my #1 choice only because it's close to new york and not as hectic? haha. I couldn't apply for spring because I wasn't done with pre-reqs and they shut down the summer program also. bummer

I haven't decided yet. I have an interview for Univ. of Rochester and waiting for yale and columbia dual program although I have no chances of getting in. lol. I'd love to go to NYU in a heartbeat if the program did not cost 100k+. moneymoneymoney :dead:

Hi @Ramboramirez11, you're from California too? (I saw on your Facebook). We are going to be SO COLD! At least we will have really great grades in the winter? lol. I hear that the summer in NYC is gnarly...that should be interesting.

P.S. is everyone thinking about where they are going to live? I'm looking into subleasing in East Village or Greenwich. What do all you New Yorkers think about that? I just want to be able to walk to class since we are going to be there a lot...

Also, is anyone planning on applying for scholarships?

Laura

Wow, what are the chances, yeah Rutgers was my first choice too, so I'm glad I got in. I live in NYC so it is not too far of a drive. Good luck with your interview and everything else! I'm sure you have a chance! trust.

Sadly, money makes the world go around, and NYU requires A LOT of it. haha

@lauraheatherj I think there may be a few of us from Southern CA.. How are you looking into housing? I really was hoping for on campus housing apartment style. When are you planning on moving?! Any news on orientation? I was looking at scholarships but it seems many of them you have to have already begun the program. And loans.. Are you looking into federal ones?! Where did you go to college?

hi, everyone! i applied before the priority deadline, and i still haven't gotten my decision yet. just wondering, is anyone in the same boat as me?

i was reading some of the previous posts, and as a native new yorker with a background in real estate, i can say that there's some validity to what brokenursenyu said. rent in manhattan is extraordinarily expensive, and if you're not looking into brooklyn or queens, be prepared to shell out a lot. fyi, average rents in the east village or greenwich village are $3000-4000/month for a 1-bedroom apartment. LES is a little better at $1900-2200/month for a 1-bedroom, but your not going to get a "view" of the east river by paying that. i would caution you when looking for apartments along the L line. most neighborhoods on the L (think bushwick and canarsie) have high crime rates.

i am in the same boat as you!! i applied for the priority deadline and still havent heard back yet. the wait is KILLING me, but the way i see it no news is good news. if we were definite "no's" we would know it by now. i think they are waiting for people who have been offered admission to accept or decline before they start notifying other people.

Hi Everyone! I am starting the program this January as well and have lived in NY since 2000. As for real estate guidance, I would strongly push for BK or Queens. I lived in Manhattan for 7 years but love living in BK. And think of the commuting time as studying time. What I would say is to make sure you are a close walk (ideally 5 to 7 minutes) to a GOOD subway line (or multiple lines). Assuming you are trying to not spend a fortune, I would look at Prospect Heights (close to TONS of subways, South Park Slope, maybe parts of Fort Greene close to the subway, and maybe Sunset Park or Borugh Park/Crown Heights area. Other parts of BK that are super nice, cute, fashionable but expensive are Dumbo, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, non- South Park Slope and of course Brooklyn Heights. I don't know North BK that well. Greenpoint is super cool but a transportation disaster. Williamsburg is as hip as it gets and the L isn't that bad (but I also think Williamsburg is very expensive).

Also, as an aside I have spoken to many people who don't go to class but instead do the podcasts. Not sure if this is what I will do but I would prefer to be in a nicer apartment watching the podcast than in a 4 br share in the E. Village where the living room is now someone's bedroom.

Also, if you are looking for your own apartment be prepared to pay a brokers fee which is usually 15% of the first years rent. Yes, only in NYC does this exist but it is pretty hard to avoid. Broker Fee "free" apartments are usually much higher priced or hard to rent which is why a broker won't take them.

Good luck and looking forward to meeting you all in January!
