I just started my application for NYU's ABSN program for Fall 2010. I heard they might not even be accepting applications for fall yet, though, since the spring deadline was only about a week ago. Is anyone else applying here for fall? Also, does anyone know what their average GPA for accepted students is? Would it help to submit my GRE scores even though they don't require it? Sorry I know its a lot of questions but I'm already nervous for admissions
To go along with my post, on finaid.org they said for the above loan scenario:
"The following table lists the minimum income necessary to repay the debt without encountering a partial economic hardship. Partial economic hardship is defined as having annual education loan payments in excess of 15 percent of discretionary income, where discretionary income is the amount by which Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) exceeds 150 percent of the poverty line. This figure is shown in the Minimum AGI (IBR) column. The Minimum AGI (ICR) column uses an alternate definition of economic hardship, based on 20 percent of discretionary income which is defined as the excess of AGI over 100 percent of the poverty line."
HOUSEHOLD SIZE OF 1 -> Mimimum AGI (IBR) is $89,896.00, Minimum AGI (ICR) is $66,068.00
HOUSEHOLD SIZE OF 2--> $95,506.00, $69,808.00
HOUSEHOLD SIZE OF 3 --> $101,116.00, $73,548.00
and so on, so as you see..we would technically be considered in economic hardship...
Bumping this to the top. Anyone care to give their insight? Genuine?
for me, there really isn't much debate. i applied to a few schools and most of the them were right along with nyu in expense (1 was actually more expensive than nyu). so ultimately, i knew that no matter where i went i'd be in debt regardless. however, i don't think i was brought this far to not attend, and i'm doing everything in my power to ensure that financial issues won't be the reason why i don't go to nursing school and what not. everyone's situation is different, and everyone thinks completely differently about where they want to be financially after they graduate. maybe some of you applied to schools that were a lot cheaper, so you have more factors to consider... but right now, i'm happy with my decision to attend nyu in the fall.
Hey all,
Just wanted to be the first to post that I was rejected officially a few weeks ago via e-mail. I e-mailed my admissions counselor directly and she replied within a few days that I was not offerred admission. However, in light of this news I wanted to share an important piece of information that I think most you will find interesting -- THERE ARE 5,300 APPLICANTS THIS YEAR, MAKING IT THE MOST COMPETITIVE YEAR IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY! This is what it stated in my official letter.
SO, a big hand to those who got accepted! And for those still waiting I wish you all the best!!

I hope you mean 5,300 for all NYU schools and not just the nursing school... That number is insaneeeeeee if it's just for the College of Nursing!
I've been accepted to Villanova's Alternate Sequence program (wish I applied earlier for the shorter one but at least it's something) and I'm still waiting to hear back on other schools but I'm confident I'll be accepted somewhere soon. Although, it was definitely saddening hearing the bad news it was probably for the best. I just cannot believe there were 5,300 of us calling and e-mailing and applying to this program of only 100-150 or so spots! And that's transfer AND 2nd degree applicants. As much as I wanted to live the dream of going to NYU and living in NYC it really seems that this worked out for the best. Plus I'll luck out on cheaper cost of living too

I'd be curious to know but that's what it says verbatim from my letter. It goes onto say "Unfortunately, we simply were not able to offer admission to every transfer applicant with strong credentials"

If it's OK with you can you please share your credentials? I would like to know what kind of people they let go. Do you feel like your credentials were strong enough for the program?
Wow that's great! Villanova should be an amazing experience..and if you do go, the longer time frame (I assume that's what alternate sequence is) will allow you to have time for yourself/internship :-) Im quite envious, wish I had applied to more schools..Im applying to Drexel for next spring (wish I had for this fall) and maybe MCPHS for January. Any other suggestions? ;-) I just finished all my pre-reqs with STRAIGHT A's (wooooo hooo) (except for stat B), but my low undergrad seems to be holding me back :-( If I dont get in to NYU im taking orgo over the summer to keep pumping my GPA..but really, what more can I do?

Still no word for me, so it's not looking good :-( That being said, how do you all reconcile the price to yourselves? Being that it costs more than you would make in one year as an RN, anyone care to share why they decided it was "worth" it? Thanks! Oh and don't forget to those calculating the price, ADD IN THE INTEREST over the duration of the loan to get the total price..there are some calculators online that can do this for you..
For example here are some calculations I did... if you borrowed 80/g at the standard rate of 6.8%, the TOTAL loan would come out to $110,477.25, with $30,477.25 being paid in interest.. this is for a 10 year term. This would be $920.64 a month.
If, as a new nurse, you were working in NYC and making $75g a year, after taxes that would be about $52,500, subtract from that 12 payments of $920.64, or $11,047.68, which leaves you with a net income of $41,452.32. If you are living in a small, old studio apartment in Manhattan, lets say your rent is at the very least 1900/month, or $22,800/year. This leaves you with $18,652.32 and if you are financially responsible, a big chunk of this, maybe 5-10g would go to retirement. Leaving you with 8-13g (roughly $600-1000/mo) left over for food/incidentals/fun spending/travel/cable/phone/bills... Now I know there are different variables depending on individual circumstance, but have you run these numbers like I have and if not, seeing them now, what do you think? Would love to see opinions from everyone!
