Hi everyone!
I was just wondering if anyone was applying to NYU for the ABSN program in fall 2017? I'm kind of nervous because my GPA isn't the highest since I had to work all four years to help pay for school which took away from my studying time. I do have work experience in the health care field and a little over 100 hours of health related volunteering. Also, how is everyone planning on paying for school since it is soo expensive?
kind of a follow up to your second question... hopefully this doesn't sound rude but I was wondering on average what ages people are if anyone doesn't mind sharing? I'm 28, got my B.A. in 2009 and then joined the Navy so I'm just trying to figure out if I'm gonna be the old person or if there is anyone else out there around my age
I doubt you'll be the oldest person. I think I heard the entering cohort at NYU will be 150-200 people so I'm sure there will be a pretty varied age range. And if it helps, I'm closer in age to you and I am not straight out of undergrad. I worked for a few years before deciding to go back and do my pre-reqs for nursing school.

hey! id like to say congratulation on getting accepted and thank you so much for sharing! i wanted to get a rough idea on what NYU was considering. like many other, im still waiting to here from them. i hope they come to a decision soon. i guess i should share as well, that would only be fair. i used to be a Nursing student at PACE university. last semester (fall 2016) during my junior year, i was having trouble focusing (more to the story but ill leave it there) on the school work. that ultimately i got academically dismissed. now, im graduating with a psychology degree just so i can try to get into an ABSN program. it would be great if i got a second try:
regardless of that i have a majority of my pre-req taken care minus nutrition which is the only one missing and the one that im taking now.
these are my stats:
B.A. in Psychology
Undergrad GPA: 2.97 (with my current nursing classes. 3.6 without the nursing classes.
Nutrition: IP (currently A)
Developmental Psych: A
Statistics: A
General Chemistry: A
A&P I: -B
A&P II: -B
Micro: +C
i have two letters of recommendation:
one from a sergeant major i used to work with in the ARMY
the other from from my pediatrics professor who's an FNP
i have two years of clinical experience which include Geri, Psych, Med Surge, and pediatrics
i don't know if NYU would accept me, but the fact that i havent heard from them could mean im being considered or they havent gotten to my packet yet haha. anyways i wanted to get an idea if i even had a chance to enter the program. it would be a blessing to have that opportunity. well i'm off, to everyone who's still waiting: good luck! hopefully you wont need it
Hi I'm also waiting to hear back from NYU and Pace....im curious how was it at Pace because it's very hard to find current reviews about their ABSN nursing program and it looks like they have a low graduation rate in the nursing program. Please share info with me...thanks

There's a saying amongst pace students so mind my French but "F PACE." I can't speak for the ABSN program but in the undergraduate program, it was hell. We started with 120 and if I'm right they are down to 50-60 students now. The program is designed to have students fail. One way they do it is with their exams, specifically in patho. The exams don't correlate with the material that is taught. So you get tested on stuff that isn't even covered. Me and my group all we used to do is study study and study and then once exam time comes by, and you get your scores, the effort you put in doesn't match your scores. So not only are you frustrated but you're also discouraged. For some reason the staff there has no idea how to make a proper blue print. You just know that 10 chapters are gonna be covered. then when you think things can't get any worse, they do. And to make things worse oh hey! surprise chapter!! That's will also be on the exam! On a good note though, because you do put a lot of effort Into studying, you'll know the material In and out. They force you learn in more creative ways so I do appreciate that skill set. (I say that because they all suck at teaching... you learn to teach yourself) just keep in mind, you'll be learning patho at a medical level +20 years of experience (that's how long the professor in charge of that class has). I can say for sure that the stress that we were put through wont match the stress in any other program. i say that because I do have friends in other ABSN programs and they don't go through half the poop that PACE nursing students go through. I hope this advice can help you out
thank you so much for that....i noticed they had a 100% passing in the NCLEX but that's because only 4 students took it....if it's going to be stressful like that it would be worth it to pay more and know that you'll be able to graduate with the needed skills and degree and not all that unnecessary stress. Thanks again for your info because I could not find any recent reviews about the program
That's crazy, I'm graduating Pace this semester lol.. As for your stats, I dont want to misinform you buddy, but they seem fine to me. Also, your healthcare experience is phenomenal, maybe that will work towards your benefit!

Hey nem90-
Been posting in this thread but am now just seeing your post/offer to answer questions so here goes...
1. What is the breakdown of student status - i.e., coming right out of undergrad, returning after many years, coming from completely different background, experience level, etc. With such a large cohort I assume it's pretty varied?
2. Since the cohort is so large, do you find that groups break out and study together, etc. I have heard with other programs that are smaller, that the cohort spend most of their time together in classes, study group, etc. Wondering if there is that same kind of support amongst the students at NYU.
3. What is the class schedule like? Wondering how long the days are and how often there is testing.
4. What are you doing/what are most others doing for housing?
5. How often are clinicals and what facilities do they use?
6. Since I am still waiting on my decision (fingers crossed) wondering how strong your stats were and how well you feel you are holding your own.
7. I guess just your overall impression of the program, the professors, the schedule, etc.
Thanks so much. Anything you can shed light on would be amazing!
I was accepted two days ago, I am 26 y/o. I have a B.S. in Exercise Science 3.31 GPA, some graduate work at Adelphi University in Exercise Physiology

Developmental Psych: A+

I also have a lot of patient-care experience in physical therapy, and am currently enrolled in an EMT program, I graduate in May.. I plan on working as an EMT over the summer. I am also Certified Phlebotomy/ekg Tech, but never ended up getting hired to do it (unfortunately no one wanted to hire me without any phleb experience).
To me, personally, I think if you have medical experience and good letters of recommendation/essay, then grades can be secondary to the admissions decision. A lot of other schools, especially Pace and SUNY Downstate, focus more on grades, at least that's what I've perceived. I got waitlisted at Downstate and rejected by Pace (which I heard isn't a top notch program).
I am elated to have gotten into NYU.. it is a prestigious school, and it's reviews are far more positive than the other programs here in NYC.
I am also happy that I chose the nursing pathway; I was originally going for Physical Therapy but after years of working in different outpatient clinics, I realized it wasn't for me. Hence, why I am here! Cheers to us future nurses and good luck to those still waiting!

If I get in, I'll be 30 by the time the program starts. Don't worry about being the oldest... I think it would be nicer to be around people that's about same age frame
