NYC CNA's

Published

It was expressed in another thread that there should be forums made for CNA's based on location. Well, here is a thread for New York City CNA's, and future CNA's from NY to post their concerns, questions, and to network.

I guess we can get this started by using introductions:

I'm from Queens, NY and I'm almost done with my CNA classes. I plan on continuing to Nursing school in the Fall of 2010 to pursue my LPN degree. Later on I will do the LPN-->RN-->BSN-->MSN.

Look forward to getting to know local medical professionals in the NYC area :redbeathe:redbeathe

Did anyone take the NYS State Board Examination yet? If so, which skills did you have?

For those preparing for the State Boards, which skills do you know, 100%? I'm anxiously waiting to take my Pre-Test for State Boards, and then take State Boards.:uhoh3:

Let me tell you I made myself sick with worry thinking that I would get that skill on the state test because my volunteer was bald and the back up had dreads.:crying2::crying2::crying2: I though it was kinda dumb to have that clause in the skills packet since the folks "in the real world" have short kinky hair, weaves, no hair, bald heads and wigs I tried to get clarification on this but never really got a decent answer. I think that was a school policy though because the examiners are pretty realistic when it comes to situations.

I took my State Board Pre - Test on Saturday. My gosh, I was SO nervous. I ended up with Occupied Bed, and Ambulation! Yay me! LOL! I passed. Everyone was supposed to get pulse and respirations but she didn't even give it to me. IDK why not. Who care. I passed! State Boards date is June 2nd. That's also the last day of my HHA class, so idk how that's gonna work, but YAY! I passed. Huge weight off my shoulder. I totally thought I was gonna fail, though because the sheet ended up being short on one side, and I had to re- arrange and re-turn the patient! :p

I can honestly say I enjoyed my clinicals. Except for a few grumpy people it was GREAT!!!! Warning to people who want to go to Manhattan Institute... DONT!!!

Dont waste your time here. I paid good money to take the cna course. What a joke. First of all you pay for 3 hours a night. The teacher is in such a rush to get out of there she lets you out an hour early.. Whats wrong with that you might ask? Well I just finished my clinicals and knew ABSOLUTELY nothing when it came to the skills. The teacher rushed thru them for one night. The majority of time was spent with our noses in the book and taking stupid quizzes. The nursing home they will send you to for clinicals is nice but all of the cnas there will tell you that you were not trained correctly.. God forbid I had to take my state bords tomorrow. I would pass the written no problem but I willbe the first to admit that I was not trained correctly in the skills which is the most important part. I plan on taking the Patient Care Tech course but I refuse to give another dime to Manhattan Institute. My advice is spend alittle more and get the training you need

They gave me two skills for the "Pre-Test" in my school, they test you to see if you have a chance @ passing State Boards BEFORE you go to State Boards as a part of the program.

However, on the State Board Exam, we are going to be given 3 skills, out of the 20 Skills we have learned; there is also 2 other "skills" we are graded on during the exam for each of the 3 skills we are assigned. Those 2 skills (other) are Hand Washing and Indirect Care; no biggie (2 Other Skills), right? LOL! So you were right, it's 5 skills!

So State Board Exam may look like this:

1. Ambulation

2. Occupied Bed

3. Partial Bed Bath

4. Hand Washing

5. Indirect Care

I called the Manhattan Institute today and they told me that their program is $1199!! Did they raise their prices?! That's a bit expensive but it's the only one that can fit into my schedule.

I'll be going to the the Mandl School of allied health next week to get info on their rates. But it is so annoying that they won't tell me their prices over the phone! I don't like schools like that 'cause they tend to be very aggressive.

Wish someone here had info on that school.....

Unles you will be doing Day Classes, PLEASE dont go to this school. I finished the evening course and clinicals and can tell you that we were not prepared for the skills test.. We spent the majority of our time reading out of some stupid book.. Its obvious that the evening teacher is in a rish to get out of there so she lets you out an hour early.. This time could be spent doing skills... Additionally when we went for clinicals we were told by the people in the nursing home that Man Institute students arent allowed to do much due to the fact that we are not trained correctly..The claim to have Job Placement.... Yeah sure, it'll cost you $45 but they dont tell you that in the beginning either The manniquens and equiptment are dirty and outdated. Im about to take my EKG/Phlebotomy classes but I am going to Big Apple Training instead. There are plenty of schools with the same schedule as Manhattan Institute and cheaper too

I PASSSED!!!

I thought for SURE I FAILED!

I feel so humbled &+ blessed. I missed an important part of the exam that for sure should have failed me; but the examiner must've saw something in my performance/ in me that made my name appear on the NYS REGISTRY!

I need a chill pill because I swear I am dreaming.. :nurse:
