It was expressed in another thread that there should be forums made for CNA's based on location. Well, here is a thread for New York City CNA's, and future CNA's from NY to post their concerns, questions, and to network.
I guess we can get this started by using introductions:
I'm from Queens, NY and I'm almost done with my CNA classes. I plan on continuing to Nursing school in the Fall of 2010 to pursue my LPN degree. Later on I will do the LPN-->RN-->BSN-->MSN.
Look forward to getting to know local medical professionals in the NYC area :redbeathe:redbeathe
No I didn't go there, but I have heard bad stories about anywhere with placement. The training school I went to said they offered placement, and when I went to find out about it, they gave me a ten page print out with the names and addresses of nursing homes and hospitals in the boros. I already had all them from online.
I work per diem at a nursing home. A hospital wont take you without at least six months experience. Nursing homes are only hiring per diem and temporary work! I get paid $10/hour. I just interviewed for another nursing home for an 8-month temporary position at $12.65/hour.
Oh and agencies only want CNAs with at least one year experience. So good luck!!!!

wow thanks a lot. This is very nice to know.
This thread hasn't been updated in a while, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to poke around and ask some things anyhow.
I just recently moved to NYC from another state and I'm in the process of requesting reciprocity for my CNA. Basically, I took classes, passed the state boards and moved back to NYC, so of course I am just starting out as a CNA.
I suppose I'm just looking for a bit of advice. I'm going to go to facilities and fill out applications in person, since I think that might increase my chances of getting hired. Hopefully. I've been applying to different places for a few weeks now with no word back from anyone and I'm starting to feel a bit frustrated. It seems I might have to look for work elsewhere.
Does anyone know of any places hiring at the moment or have any tips? I'm pretty new to New York and my certification hasn't transferred yet, so I'm wondering if that would be an issue. I'm also willing to look for work in New Jersey (In the Jersey City/Hoboken area preferably).
Please PM me or respond here if you live in the city and can offer any advice or help. Thank you so much.

theres Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC). visit libertyhealth.org and download an application. Hoboken University Medical Center (HUMC) is also a nice hospital. lots of new stuff there. its best to visit the hospital in my opinion for employment oppertunity. spanish speaking is preferred in JCMC however. hope that helps. :)
also, would anyone know about CNA certification information for those who have completed fundamentals of nursing at the community college level? i completed it last semester and would like to get a job as a CNA but a counselor at school told me that all i have to do is take a state test and i get my liscense. anyone know how accurate this is? i want to definitely do it.
well i start my cna courses in about two weeks. Im going for cna + pct. I'm very excited and i would love to land a job in a hospital. New age is pretty expensive however I have to make the best out of it. Also workforce 1 suspend the cna grant they told me to call back in july so I am upset about that. I don't mind paying for the cna classes but i want a grant for the pct classes.
How did you classes go mymy1219, I was thinking about going to that school new age training. Its expensive but they give you job placement?
Well i'm actually not finished yet but i like the school I am learning a lot. You should call the school and speak to one of the advisors for information

Got the job!! *DEEP BREATH*
Now all I can do is hope for the best on this ride. Believe me, it WILL be a ride; this will be my first time working in a facility as a CNA! Transferring from Home Health..
