  1. awful! Most places only hire per diem, and not for much. I work at two nursing homes per diem for $10/hour and $11.65/hour.
  2. Hey just relax! When I took my state exam, I knew I passed the written (it was so easy), and I knew I did awesome on my skills... Until I got home and realized that during peri care I forgot to change the position of the washcloth with each wipe. They still passed me.
  3. omg 15-20 residents? I'm a new CNA, my first real shift is tomorrow, 10 residents. And I thought that was a lot!! I like your advice though! I've been nothing but polite with my fellow CNAs, and actually everyone! I say please and thank you, and greet everyone I see, and I'm always looking to see if I can assist. :)
  4. No I didn't go there, but I have heard bad stories about anywhere with placement. The training school I went to said they offered placement, and when I went to find out about it, they gave me a ten page print out with the names and addresses of nursing homes and hospitals in the boros. I already had all them from online. I work per diem at a nursing home. A hospital wont take you without at least six months experience. Nursing homes are only hiring per diem and temporary work! I get paid $10/hour. I just interviewed for another nursing home for an 8-month temporary position at $12.65/hour. Oh and agencies only want CNAs with at least one year experience. So good luck!!!!
  5. The drive in (Mom drives me) is 15 mins. The bus ride home is half an hour. The LTC that I interviewed for this week is a 5 minute walk, I can see it from my window!
  6. Yeah good luck with job placement. I'm from Queens, been certified since February, work per diem and still applying.
  7. For clinicals, you'll be paired with a CNA. Don't be afraid to do patient care with them, it's the best way to learn. And don't be afraid to ask questions too! As for your state skills test, you will have either a volunteer or a classmate playing the part of your resident.
  8. I went to school for 5 weeks, m-th 9-2:20. Two test a week, and a final. No homework. 4 days of clinical. @irish lpn- I don't know hospitals that train, but for school, I went to American Medical Career Training in Jamaica (the one on Hillside). The teacher was great, and the secretaries helped us with skills if we came in early.
  9. I just got hired PRN in Queens, NY for $10 an hour. First job.
  10. Thanks! Yes, Peri care is a skill done on a dummy!!
  11. I just finished my clinical two weekends ago. With feeding, some of the residents need to be told to open their mouth with every bite, it's just how they are. I had four days of clinical, so I got to know my residents well. Bed making... well I shadowed four different CNAs and made a lot of beds, but everyone made theirs different! Keep your chin up, I bet you're doing great!
  12. Just found out I lucked out and passed my test!!
  13. Just got in from my NYS CNA certification test. I know I passed the written test. Skills wise, I had perineal care, weight, and range of motion lower extremity. I know I did weight and ROM fine. I did perineal care fine, until I forgot to change the spot on the washcloth for each stroke! Argh!! How could I forget? On the skills checklist, there are 22 steps for perineal care, so I missed 2 steps because of not changing the spot on the washcloth. Is there a chance I'll pass? I wont be able to get my test results for 5 business days, and I'm already dying to know, one hour later! Thanks in advance.
