NYC CNA's

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

It was expressed in another thread that there should be forums made for CNA's based on location. Well, here is a thread for New York City CNA's, and future CNA's from NY to post their concerns, questions, and to network.

I guess we can get this started by using introductions:

I'm from Queens, NY and I'm almost done with my CNA classes. I plan on continuing to Nursing school in the Fall of 2010 to pursue my LPN degree. Later on I will do the LPN-->RN-->BSN-->MSN.

Look forward to getting to know local medical professionals in the NYC area :redbeathe:redbeathe

Its definitely the sign of the times. I just finished my clinicals at the Manhattan Institute. Our instructor was fantastic. Moreso considering she had over 30 students to teach. She was thankful to us that we were respectful of one another and cooperated. Most of us only got to do one skill meaning we learned and did all skills only once. Toward the end it got better, but you can tell she was wiped out. I paid the $999 and not surprised they raised it. Good Luck to everyone!!!!!

Oh man she's a gem isnt she? My class was also huge, a lot of the students were very serious and respectful. In fact most of us still keep in contact. She was sooo helpful as we were getting ready for the state boards, I would come back and practice and she would be there and giving little tips. :heartbeat:heartbeat:heartbeat

i posted this on another board but thought i'd put the update here, too being that i had negative things to say about allen school previously.

tonight was the last night of my cna course! although, as much as i may have complained, i am a little sad . i am going to miss my teacher, and my classmates. but, we are probably going to bump into each other for another month. we start clinical's april 6th - april 9th, and from then on, its time to pre-test, then off to state boards.

i am convinced that it was not entirely the school that irritated me-- but the students. i am also proud to say that with the combined help of my class, we were able to "fight" for reform in this school. the entire staff will have a meeting on saturday and come up with a strategy to fix the things that are wrong. in addition, the clinical instructor is going to be taped, so that students (possibly) and teachers can have an official clinical standard for state board prep. we were also extended an additional week to practice our skills with a qualified instructor (free of charge). :redbeathe

i am pretty excited to start my clinical rotation and i will let you all know how it goes. clinicals don't start for another 3 weeks. so technically, i have 3 weeks to go to remedial (practice) classes, watch videos, and study for the board exam!!! :yeah:

in between that time, i may attempt to get my cpr certification as well because i noticed that alot of facilities require this now for employment ($60 certification fee).

so:

1. three weeks till clinicals start.

2. clinicals for a week. april 6 - 9th.

3. pre-test the following week.

4. board exam asap.

technically, i won't be certified and employed until may -june.. :chuckle

congrats on finishing!!! i am on my 3rd week. i have been extremely busy trying to memorize the medical abbreviations etc. we get mid terms on thursday already!!!

Thank you SO much!!! :redbeathe:redbeathe

We start clinical rotations next Monday @ the VA Hospital, so wish me luck. :nurse: I'm just going to take this one step @ a time. Gonna get my hair done, and buy some new scrubs for the internship (only had one for the class, I'm frugal & cheap!), plus we gotta get them "ugly" nurse shoes. They say no sneakers (I had a pair of white Dr. Schol's. SP?) that are perfectly comfy !

Sidebar: Has anyone realized that a lot of hiring (NH & Hosp.) places require a CPR certificate? Anyone know of any good CPR classes in Queens, Manhattan, or BK?

i made a post through another thread & then was told about this one ;; thanx by the way SerendipityWoMyn; im just beginning to learn the site.

heres my ques ::

im currently pursuing my interest in nursing ; but really do not know where to begin, with CNA courses how does it work? i want to be an RN which will later lead me to Nurse in Anesthetics. but with CNA classes, can anyone help me with what school or program to attend and when im done with a CNA course what happens next? and i would like a school that will give me job placement when the course is done. help! im so lost in figuring this all out. :banghead:

ive been looking into the manhattan institute but like i said i want somewhere with job placement.

thanks

hello to all. i am from the bronx beginning my cna classes in may. i am going to new age training. its on 8th ave between 35th and 36th. they have reasonable fees and also offer a flexible schedule. full time days, nights, weekends classes. they also offer a combination cna+pct class for about $2400 i believe. its 8 weeks long if you go fulltime. i also would like to let all of you prospective cna's know that, depending on your family size, if you make less that 56,000 a year, you may be eligible for a grant from workforce 1 that will cover your costs for up to $3,800. contact your local office for more details. its not hard to get at all. they just want you to take a few short classes and do some research and you can qualify for the grant. its one of those hidden options for those of us who cant afford cna classes. here is the website. small business services - workforce1. also the manhattan educational opportunity center also offers free classes for low income students. you have to take a tabe test and some interviews. they have a test date coming up for april 17th, so jump on it if you can. the manhattan educational opportunity center they have summer classes starting in june. good luck to you all and hope to see you in the field soon. :) oh and by the way, dont expect to land that awesome job at first. if you have to go through agency or ltc then so be it. its hard getting a job in healthcare when you have no experience so just be thankful if you get in somewhere. work your way from the bottom up and it will be worth it. once you get some experience, it will be much easier. just be patient. good things come to those who wait. :)

Thanks SerendipityWomYn!!

I know, there are threads for Nurses by location, but it is nice to have a CNA by location thread too!!

Hello everyone! I am in Queens, NY too. Just passed my state exam! :yeah: One small step in my new career path....... also plan on going for a BSN

I have my first interview coming up this week..... a little nervous, even though I have interviewed hundreds of CNA's and Nurses when I worked in HR.... I'm used to asking the questions, not answering them!!!

It has been a frustrating couple of weeks though.... with hiring freezes, and 2 hospitals closing in Queens, it does not seem to be the best time for us to be job hunting.......especially as newbies!!

Good luck to all you NYC CNA's!

So how is everything working out for you? :heartbeat

Next week I begin my Internship @ the VA Hospital. I will be blogging daily about it on my Live Journal, so if anyone is on Live Journal and wants to see a document of my experience, send me a message/PM.

The Internship is from 8AM-3PM Monday-Thursday. The following Monday, we go back to school to Pre-Test (Written) for the State Board Exam, and if we pass the written Pre-Test, we will schedule the clinical Pre-Test the same day. If both Pre-Tests are passed successfully, we can then schedule State Boards that will be taken @ our school facility. My Nurse Tech/PCT Class starts May20Th- Will probably be over in July.

:typing Hopefully I can be up and running with a job by the summer! :redbeathe

Hello everyone. I'm from the Bronx and am considering taking a CNA job to get me through LPN school which starts in September. It seems like a quick way to get experience in the field. I was even more intrigued when a friend told me starting pay was $15, but when I look around, all I am seeing is $12. If it's $12, then I will probably just keep the job I have now and not spend $1200 on the class. I made a post about this earlier today but so far no one has answered. So I was hoping that maybe you guys can tell me what your knowledge of the CNA salary is in our area.

Thanks and good luck on your classes!!

Yea, $12-$13 seems to be the average in NYC. Although, if you work night's and/or weekends @ some facilities you may be able to make $15 w. shift differential's.
