It was expressed in another thread that there should be forums made for CNA's based on location. Well, here is a thread for New York City CNA's, and future CNA's from NY to post their concerns, questions, and to network.

I guess we can get this started by using introductions:

I'm from Queens, NY and I'm almost done with my CNA classes. I plan on continuing to Nursing school in the Fall of 2010 to pursue my LPN degree. Later on I will do the LPN-->RN-->BSN-->MSN.

I just finished my Internship @ the VA Hospital yesterday; it was a wonderful experience! I cried many times and the residents "go home w. you" after your clinical rotations. Needless to say, I grew so attached to the resident's, that I am going to start volunteering there; I will be handing in my volunteer application next week right after I take my school's Pre-Test! After I pass the Pre-Test, then it's time to take State Boards! :yeah:

1. I got into a Free HHA program yesterday sponsored by Partners in Care! Starts May 11Th 8AM-4:30PM Monday through Friday for 3 weeks. It's pretty neat because that certificate never expires, the agency has 1199 etc. and I can work as a HHA while I take my PCT ( Patient Care Technician: EKG & Phlebotomy course- which will end in August), then try and apply for a hospital job w. the following credentials.

a. PCT Certificate - Makes me worth $15-$20HR where I live.

b. CNA Certificate/ License: I'm still waiting to take State Boards, BTW - Makes me worth $13-$15 HR where I live.

c. HHA Certificate - Worth $8HR where I live.

d. CPR Certificate - Needed to work in Healthcare.

* If all goes well, I should be ready to apply for a CNA/PCT position by September of this year.

2. I was supposed to start my PCT course May 20Th. Do you guys think I will be able to take both classes, or should I start the PCT in June when the HHA is complete?

3. I got a chance to hand in my volunteer application for the VA Hospital yesterday as well; wouldn't mind working there. That's where I did my Internship and they have great benefits.

Next year, I start my LPN school application process.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ commentary?

i made a post through another thread & then was told about this one ;; thanx by the way SerendipityWoMyn; im just beginning to learn the site.

heres my ques ::

im currently pursuing my interest in nursing ; but really do not know where to begin, with CNA courses how does it work? i want to be an RN which will later lead me to Nurse in Anesthetics. but with CNA classes, can anyone help me with what school or program to attend and when im done with a CNA course what happens next? and i would like a school that will give me job placement when the course is done. help! im so lost in figuring this all out. :banghead:

ive been looking into the manhattan institute but like i said i want somewhere with job placement.

I hear Manhattan Institute is great, and I believe they do offer job placement. There are plenty of options in NY. How is your search going? I went the the Allen School, but it was pretty pricey. While I was taking the course I was ********/complaining a lot; but now I believe it is the best move I made.

The only real complaint I have is their equipment should probably be a bit more upgraded; but the teachers are wonderful and the Internship was fabulous! Hopefully, I can pass the Board exam now. Needless to say, I'm going to be doing my PCT class there as well so it couldn't have been that bad of a school. Like I said, it's pricey, but when you work at a NH facility, they give you tuition reimbursement- they refund $750 of the $1400 you paid for the course.

Greetings To All.

I reside in Queen, NY. I just started my CNA class last night. My class will end on April 10th and then my internship will begin. I plan on proceeding on to pursue a certifcation as a Nursing Technician and then on to my BSN with no date confimed as yet. I was fortunate enough to be able to obtain an educational grant from the department of labor that covered all of the cost for my class. :yeah:

I would probably start the PCT when the HHA is complete because this way, there is no confusion between the courses. I suspect you should still be completed within your goal of starting to place applications by the fall.

I know Ive been MIA these past weeks. Tonite I finallly take my finals. I am feeling confident about the written tests but am not so sure about the skills. There is really so much to learn and practice. Not knowing which skills you will get on the state boards doesnt help LOL..Next stop, PCT course... How is everyone else doing?

hello to all. i am from the bronx beginning my cna classes in may. i am going to new age training. its on 8th ave between 35th and 36th. they have reasonable fees and also offer a flexible schedule. full time days, nights, weekends classes. they also offer a combination cna+pct class for about $2400 i believe. its 8 weeks long if you go fulltime. i also would like to let all of you prospective cna's know that,depending on your family size, if you make less that 56,000 a year, you may be eligible for a grant from workforce 1 that will cover your costs for up to $3,800. contact your local office for more details. its not hard to get at all. they just want you to take a few short classes and do some research and you can qualify for the grant. its one of those hidden options for those of us who cant afford cna classes. here is the website. small business services - workforce1. also the manhattan educational opportunity center also offers free classes for low income students. you have to take a tabe test and some interviews. they have a test date coming up for april 17th, so jump on it if you can. the manhattan educational opportunity center they have summer classes starting in june. good luck to you all and hope to see you in the field soon. :) oh and by the way, dont expect to land that awesome job at first. if you have to go through agency or ltc then so be it. its hard getting a job in healthcare when you have no experience so just be thankful if you get in somewhere. work your way from the bottom up and it will be worth it. once you get some experience, it will be much easier. just be patient. good things come to those who wait. :)

i tried to do this thru workforce and they wouldnt help me because they said since i am employed in the real state feild and thats what i have expereince in, they will only pay for me to go to real estate school.. ***!!! why would i need to go to school to learn somethiing i already know??? anywho, please tell me if i was wrongly informed,

Yes.. I passed my final with a 91 and have my clinicals scheduled for the week of the 4th.. Serenity, which school will you be doing your PCT in? I would like to stay with Manhattan Institute but if I find somewhere cheaper I may switch. I called another school but I didnt like the "salesman" mentality of it. If you can't tell me the price of the course over the phone, I am NOT wasting my time...

Ahhh skills.. I feel comfortable with the bedpan, handwashing, occupied bed, ambulating, drainage bag.. I feel I really need work with peri and cath care . Question, did your school tell you that you should bring someone with hair and without weaves, locks or braids just in case they ask you to do haircare? They told me that in my school which sounds SO stupid since real people are bald, ond have weaves, locks and braids... UGH..

Hi.. I just finished the CNA course in Manhattan Institute. It was pretty good.. I feel I got my moneys worth.. The only thing I didnt like about it was the condition of their restrooms and how hot the classroom got at times
