NY RN may move to TX

I'm a Labor and Delivery RN in NY. I happened to apply for a full time L&D position at Las Colinas Medical Center. It's in Irving TX. How far is that from Dallas? What is the typical salary for an experienced nurse? They called me for an interview but I need to know if it would be worth moving. I'm looking for a better way of life for me and my 10 y/o son, life in NY is great, but way to expensive for a single mom. He plays football and is very good. I know football is big in TX. How are the school systems? Is housing affordable? Sorry for the long post, my brain is going at a hundred miles a minute. Thanks for your responses.

Las Colinas is a more upscale section of Irving. Irving is a suburb located about 12 miles west of Dallas. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is partially located in Irving.

How much do experienced nurses get paid? Well, we would have to know how much experience you have before we could answer that question. I would expect the pay to be much lower here in Texas due to the lower cost of living. However, due to the soft real estate market, you could buy a decent-sized house in Irving for $125,000 or less, and the rents are cheap if you want to rent a house or apartment.

Thanks 'The Commuter'. i appreciate your response.

Come on Down!

As TheCommuter said, that is a very nice area. My oldest child lives in Irving - nice (1200 sq ft) 2 bdrm place in a secure complex with garage & all ammenities... for ~$1k per month & it's right next to a park/lake just 1/4 mile from the Dallas Cowboys training facility. Great shopping & schools in the area. Cost of living will be waaaaay less than you are used to. No state income tax is a huge plus.

The only caveat... you REALLY need to be prepared for extremely hot summertime weather. Triple digits is pretty common - much hotter than Houston. Make sure your car's cooling system and air conditioner are in tip-top shape so you won't have a melt-down on the freeway.

I hope you decide to join us. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you. I will keep you guys posted. Are you familiar with the Medical Center itself? Are the nurses who work there happy?

I would definitely have to get used to the heat, triple digits sounds crazy!!!!! I know football is big in the south, my son is 10 and has been playing for 5 years, he's pretty darn good. How are the teams for kids his age?

Have you checked out "City-data .com" ? If you go to the forums on that site they provide a TON of info on different parts of the country and you can ask specific questions there and get more feedback on particular parts of Dallas. It has helped me tremendously in the past!

Hello rastanursern,

How did your interview go? I am also looking in to relocating to that Dallas, texas area. I have two phone interviews lined up but I am not sure what to think. I live 1100 miles aways and am afraid they may want me to make that trip for a second interview if selected. Just wanted to see what the follow-up is for the interview.

Thanks,

Shawn:confused:

I had my phone interview this afternoon. It went great!!! They would like me to come out for an in person interview as the next step. I'm looking to go out there around the first week of August, for a few days, will look around, maybe look at some apartments and get a feel for the surrounding area.

I'll be in the DFW area from 8/10-8/13 for my in person interview and to visit and look at prospective apartments. Looking forward to it.

Thats great. I start orientation on 8/8, I was able to get a 3/2 apt for right around $1100, and my complex is about 5 minutes or so from where you'll be interviewing. I have family up there so I was able to get things done rather quickly.. Good luck on your interview.

Shawn
