I'm a Labor and Delivery RN in NY. I happened to apply for a full time L&D position at Las Colinas Medical Center. It's in Irving TX. How far is that from Dallas? What is the typical salary for an experienced nurse? They called me for an interview but I need to know if it would be worth moving. I'm looking for a better way of life for me and my 10 y/o son, life in NY is great, but way to expensive for a single mom. He plays football and is very good. I know football is big in TX. How are the school systems? Is housing affordable? Sorry for the long post, my brain is going at a hundred miles a minute. Thanks for your responses.
Congratulations rastanursern!
I am a transplanted NYer originally from LI.
I can tell you I had culture shock when I first moved down here, but I am glad I did. The salaries are not the same as NY, however, it's all relative when you see how cheaply you can live in Texas when compared to NY. The cost of living is lower, houses/ apartments are affordable and there is no state tax like NY.
The weather is hot, hot, hot in the summer time although it is definitely less humid than LI or NYC (you never mentioned where in NY you live). Remember that you are visiting during the hottest part of the year and we're having somewhat of a heatwave on top of that. The rest of the year is pleasant. It does get cold here and I have worn a coat a couple of times, but mostly a jacket during the winter.
If you are going to live in the metroplex (the area around Dallas and Fort Worth) there are plenty of things to do during your time off with your son. I don't know too much about the school systems in that area since I lived there a while ago. Football is huge here and I'm sure your son will have a good time with that.
I do miss NY, but I'm glad I moved down here due to the cost of living.
Best of luck to you and if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them!
I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that your interview goes very well!So I'm finally here. Staying out in Irving with a friend of mine. I went by the medical center this afternoon and it's a very nice facility. My interview is tomorrow morning at 9:30am. Wish me luck guys. I will keep you all posted!!

Good luck tomorrow!!! I found a nice place in the Las Colinas area of Irving. I was able to push my start date off a little because it got a little to hectic... It has been extremely hot.. But the area is nice & affordable... Let us know how everything goes!!!
