NY Hospitals Hire RN-BSN Only?

I'm currently in the last semester of my Associates of Nursing program. I'm DYING to get out of Florida and head to NY, but I've heard on more than one occasion that RN's are only hired out there with a Bachelor's Degree. I plan to immediately start the BSN, but I'd like to get right to work with the degree I have.

Anybody know if the rumor is true?

From what I see, BSN is preferred, but not always the only demand. If you are already attending classes for the BSN, they may still consider you.

im a new grad in ny with the adn as previously stated bsn in some places are preferred, but the flipside of that is there are more adn program than bsn + there are only 3 schools in the nyc area that even has the bsn, pace, nyu, liu and if you count aldephi...which license are u going to get, because your school will send ur info to the fl state boards

True, true.

Perhaps the larger and famous hospitals in Manhattan may push for a all BSN staff, but those hospitals also have the funds to pay higher wages and also recruit nurses from all over the United States, thus aren't limited as much to the local pool of nurses. However once one goes to the NYC hospital system, and or the local hospitals in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island things are different. Even Beth Israel, not to shabby a hosptial, and just built a new school in the Garment Center area, still has a two year program

The NYC area has far more Associate programs than BSN, and the local hospitals, again especially the smaller and ones outside of Manhattan tend to recruit grads from those programs.

have you found a job yet? i am in nyc also with my adn and no luck yet!

Sorry, I forgot to follow this topic, so I missed responding to you all. I still have not found a job and I wish I had stayed in FL for my year of experience. I had no idea it would be this bad up north.

Not that you could have known, but it really isn't the best of times for RNs, GNs or other nurses to be looking for work in NYC at the moment, regardless of the "healthcare is hiring" blize from the media.

Still smarting from the closing of two hospitals in Queens about one year ago, St. Vincent's Catholic Hospital just closed, adding over 500 experienced nurses to the ranks looking for employment. Lenox Hill Hospital was on financial tenter hooks, and was just sold to NorthShore-LIJ, while the HHC system announced layoffs of over 3000 employees, including nurses. All this while the many local New York City nursing schools are graduating new classes of nurses every six months or yearly. In short there are quite allot of nurses out there chasing what few openings there are for full time or even per diem work.

Someone mentioned in another thread that hospitals in upstate NY are hiring, including new grads, but don't know how that fits in with your plans.

Hospitals, indeed the whole NYC/NYS healthcare system in going to be in a state of flux for awhile as the effects of the recession are worked off, a state budget is finally passed, and what is going to happen when "ObamaCare" comes into full effect with it's cuts in Medicare/Medicaid funding (something many NYC/NYS hospitals really depend upon), and what sort of compensation insurance companies are going with in future.

the trend is to hire BSN now... here in the texas med center there are several hospitals that will ONLY hire BSN, even though there job posting say BSN "preferred"

thats not necessarily true. i attend wagner in si and we have a bsn and absn...and there are many other schools within a 30-60 mile radius of new york city. however, there are still many more adn programs in nyc.
