Hello , Everyone I'm a third semester student at Northern Virginia Community College and I know this is a bit early to be inquiring about nursing school but I just would like to get a head start on getting to know everyone interested in applying! I'm excited for the upcoming semester! i have some ice breakers to get this conversation started as well. Has anyone taken the TEAS test yet and if so how was your experience? and also do you have any remaining classes to take before applying.

So the counselors just make sure you have the minimum requirements then they take your application to the nursing department? Is there another step or after it reaches the department you’ll know if you’re accepted or not?

The department ranks them and then acceptance letters go out for those in the program. For example if 250 applications go to the dept. then the dep ranks them in order based on competitiveness. If they have only 125 seats then they pick the first 125 from the ranked list. Just to be clear,I dont know how many the dept is taking this year.

Does anyone have backups that they are looking into? I think we're all very anxious about this. I've been exploring options in the case that I don't get in this fall, the first being applying for next Spring. Other than that, I'm not sure. I already have a bachelor's degree and doing an ABSN isn't an option for me right now because I need to work while going to school and those programs don't allow for working. Also, I've heard great things about NVCC's nursing program from people in the field.

What other programs do people know about as a backup if not accepted here or next Spring?

I started looking into different options after I knew that high school transcripts needed to be "evaluated" which wasn't stated in the list of requirements by the way. Ugh. Anyway, I'm still thinking if I should apply to an LPN program by Fall then bridge to RN after a year, or just wait until next year after my husband and I move (he's in the military and will reenlist next year), then transfer to a BSN program since I already have an associates in general studies and have done most BSN prerequisites.

My application was incomplete because I have not taken SDV 101 BUT they told me that since I have taken college courses, it should count towards that. Also, someone else mentioned that too in a previous thread. They are really doing everything they can to get rid of applications.

Wow why are they giving people misinformation? I remember asking about that SDV 101 thing last year. They told me that since I already have my A.S that I was exempt so I dont need it. I hope I dont get told something else because I dont have it either. Im still waiting to hear something. I even think I saw something in writing last year but they take things down so much on the website that it's crazy. I applied 3/18. Im really anxious. I tried so hard to triple check everything this year.

They only waive the SDV class if you have earned a degree (AS,BS,etc). If you've taken the general college SDV class (or other SDV), that could satisfy the SDV (Intro to Healthcare) which is more program-specific. That class has always been a requirement to complete any degree program in Nova.

Their whole system is just a mess. They misinform applicants OR they do not disclose everything until it's too late. I asked them about my high school transcripts many times and the counselors said it should be okay. I triple checked requirements list and nowhere did it say that it needed to be evaluated. So now my application may get rejected because of that.

TELL ME ABOUT IT! Now our application won't even be considered. I put in so much effort to be considered competitive and now this ONE stupid credit is holding me back.

Right. My counselor called MEC as soon as I heard and basically they said that no matter how competitive you are or your grades and TEAS score are, if you miss one requirement you're out. I started looking for other schools after that. Lol. I've been trying to get into this nursing program for more than a year now.

The SDV has always been a requirement and I’ve only ever been told it’s waived by having an AS/AA/bs/ba. Or if you took an ABLE exam that also can exempt you or if you transferred a course.

They have it written that college transcripts have to be evaulted from other countries. It stands to reason they would also require high school documents to be evaluated.

From prior years I know that after they say you’re application is OK they check your residency so you might get contacted to provide additional stuff before you get ranked.

Tbh, eligibility rules are there for a reason. Yes, it sucks that minor things can affect all the hard work you've done.. But it would also be unfair for those who have satisfied their requirements (and worked just as hard) lose their position to someone who has not.

Mind you, my application is also on the rocks b/c of international transcripts, but despite of (very likely) disappointment, I'd be more worried about getting my requirements in order because complaining without action does nothing.

Just have to put my two cents in because it's kind of been a drag where this thread has been going.

Anyone know how many seats they had last year?

&& I’ve literally been stalking my email for any updates ? lol

There were 130 seats last year. This spring semester for the 2018 cohort there are 110 seats. But a person who didn’t get in last year’s rejection letter said 130 seats
