NVCC First yr students, How goes the battle?

Howdy. Is it as bad as you thought? lol I hope not. I heard you guys had to give actual bed baths in lab, sweet, lol The course gets better when you start ur clinicals, then you get to make up your nursing plans, joy joy!! There are books in the library that can help you with them. Or check out half.com or ur book stores. Half.com would be cheaper, and havaing a book totally up to date isnt that important. I have "Nursing care care plans 6th ed) ISBN 9780323039543 Its a good book. if your short for cash, it is not a MUST have! check ur local libraries as well. Check ebay and search for "nursing care plans" some older books for like $5!!

As well for ur drug passage exam that you take in LAB, you will get a list of drugs you need drug cards for! Think there was a list of about 30. One can either make them up on ur own, OR buy drug cards! MEC bookstore has them or Borders! if you sign up for a Borders reward card (its free) u get weekly coupons emailed to ya, and quite often they are for 20% off!! And they have the Mosby ones and Med-Deck. i ahve the Med Deeck and i think it was only mssing one of the drugs that we had to know. During the drug passage exam, ur allowed to look at ur med cards if u forget, just like you would on the floor! At least that was the case last yr, things are always changing! Cheers

Do you think we should try doing practice NCLEX questions before the tests or just read and read and read? What about taking notes from the book?

What has worked for me is to make studyguides using the powerpoints. During lecture, I would use a red pen to take notes on my powerpoints and then I would add information from the book using a blue pen. I read the chapters we are assigned but I only take notes on the topics that are covered in the powerpoints. The week of the exam I just use the studyguide that I have now created to study. I also do nclex questions on the topic that is being covered. These studyguides are extremely helpful during the final, because I don't have to reread the chapters.

okay, six tests later, we have our very first final next Monday. We were told 100 questions and two hours to answer them. Wish us all a good luck!

You will be done before us, we have to suffer until the 18th!! lol

Ha ha ha, I almost felt sorry for you guys, and then I remembered that you will be done a whole year before us.:chuckle

Yeah, but we've been at it a whole year before you! We've paid our dues, LOL. What's nice is the Arlington students who started at the same time as us and are graduating now. I'll bet they're glad they worked through the summer.

I like the idea of making a study guide out of the lecture slides by adding notes to them. I will do it next semester. However...This semester, I don't even know where to start. Final is on Monday. I feel like I have to start over because I do not remember things I knew in the beginning of the semester. :banghead: Aghh...

My advice for studying for the finals would be to just know the big things about every topic learned during the semester. You are not going to be able to go back and study everything. So just know the big things about each one, like the main symptoms, nursing interventions, drugs and side effects. I would concentrate more of my studying on the last lecture, because all of that is new information. The day before the final, try to get with a study group and just go over the things you learned during the semester w/o using any notes. And during the final, just remember to watch your time and make the best decision. Good Luck!

I wish I had made better notes, lol Prior to each semester I have stated "my notes will be better!" It has yet to happen, lol Yes, try and go over the important stuff, the big ticket items, the nursing interventions. I'm starting right from square 1 and writing out questions right from day 1 of the reading. Best of luck

So how did everyone do? I am so glad it's over for a while.

I did well, after MUCH stress. Sooooo glad it's over. Can't believe they posted the reading for next semester already . Who wants to think about that already??? I'm busy Christmas shopping . . . I keep trying to finish but it hasn't worked out yet, several more things I need to pick up AND I need to clean my house desperately. Lucky my dh is off work after today for the rest of the week so he WILL be helping me :lol2:. How'd you do???

I did better on the final than I had ever hoped, which really helped me because this semester was pretty mediocre for me. :lol2: It seems like everyone I know who was on the borderline made it through, and I am happy about that.

Oh, good job! With the final being so heavily weighted it can really help you OR hurt you!!! I guess some people flunked out and/or didn't pay because I was able to get into the lecture & labs that I wanted . . . still stuck with Ms. A for clinical but honestly that schedule works well for me so I think I would keep it regardless . . . it's only 7 weeks of my life. Mrs. S. swears that Ms. A is all bark and no bite :wink2: so I will keep that in mind if she barks in my direction.

Merry Christmas :tree:
