Nursing Students- Were Any of You "B" Students- and Still Got Accepted?

Published

Hi nursing students! I don't want to take you away from your studies for too long but I was hoping you can answer some questions for me.

Are there any of you out there that were mostly "B" students that got into nursing school. If so, how long did it take? Were there other factors you think set you apart from other applicants?

To all students: What was your acceptance GPA? How many schools did you apply to? Anything special set you apart?

Thanks ladies and gents!

Specializes in Neuro, Neuro ICU.

I had a 3.19 GPA. I had quite a few classes that were C's from my first year of college (when i had no idea what i wanted to do), and just didn't really care. I had the theory that "C's get degrees" because my social life was way more important. Luckily I got pretty much A's & B's (1 c in A&P 2) once i decided to do nursing, that it balanced out my GPA.

I applied to 2 schools and got accepted into both. One was a Bachelors @ a magnet hospital, that only took the GPA for classes that were required for nursing.

I also applied the following semester @ my community college which is super competitive, b/c i decided it wasnt worth all the debt and driving an hour to school in the snow during winter time. I ended up taking an extra semester of classes to boost my GPA and some science classes that earned me some "extra points" and I got in to my community college on my first attempt.

Hope this helps :) and GOOD LUCK :)

The first part sounds like me! I should've never started taking classes unless I knew what I was going to be but at least we're in now :D

Dear mjmoon,

Why are you opening up a thread so others could have a pi****g contest at your expense? Where does it say only "A" students are accepted into nursing school. I'd rather have a "marginal" book tpye of nurse who has his/her skills down pat than a "book smart" nurse that is CLUELESS when it comes to patients, procedures, and manners.

A little forewarning: Everyone and their brother claims to have a GPA hovering around a 4.0. If you believe that, send me a private e-mail because I have a bridge to sell to you in Brookklyn. Cheap. I don't care what kind of family background students have, how much they made at their previous jobs, how many apps they have on their I-phone. I. Don't. Care. And neither does anyone else. It's these threads that only serve to violate those that are trying and not flashing their "look what I have and what you don't" catty personalities.

You could not said this more perfectly, nailed it...now if only those that spout off about how many schools they got accepted into, how great their grades are and scanning these threads to pass their "I haven't graduated yet but act like I'm a seasoned nurse" advice will stop typing about themselves long enough to read what you wrote.. OP I had a B average and will be a APN in 6 months...keep at it, good luck

The first time around for me, a person could be accepted with Bs instead of the so-common 4.0 that is the norm now. But that was more than 40 years ago. Things have changed tremendously.

Make sure you don't retake all of your classes for better grades.

I applied before finishing up my prereqs (I had only one left, and that was human anatomy). So this C+ I am getting in Anatomy doesn't count.

My cumulative GPA was a 3.935, and my prerequisite GPA was a 3.7. I was accepted before even finishing this Anatomy course, and I am so happy that I decided to take this LAST instead of first!

I didn't get any As in the prerequisites for my ABSN program- only Bs. I had a 3.01 undergrad, and a 3.2 in pre-reqs.

I started my pre-reqs in Jan of '09, applied in October, and got the letter in January of 2010. I was still in the process of completing the last 2 required courses when I got the acceptance letter.

My school looks at everything, though- essays, recommendations, GPA, interview, etc, but I hope that this relieves some of your fears. :)

And these are the type of nursing schools people should be applying for. They looked at GPA, volunteer experience (which is a HUGE plus), customer service non-related work experience, essays, diversity, etc. The most important thing to have at my school is to have STELLAR essays and decent grades (no Ds or C-s!).

OK I had a 2.4. I'm white, no kids, not in any need of financial assistance. I'm not catty ("Oh did you see the shoes she was wearing!!). My dad is not a doctor, my mother will probabbly never be "mother of the year", I don't "give it up" if a guy notices me. I take responsibility for my own grades: if I flunk an exam, it was all my doing. Not the teacher's fault, not the Chatty Cathy's that sit behind me in class. If I'm assigned a "difficult" patient, I don't place blame on my instructor, accusing him/her not "liking" me. No, I don't friend people on Facebook so I can keep track of all the parties and shopping excursions they go on. I won't give anyone my cell phone number just to have them text me at 4a.m. to ask what I'm doing. Hey, if I do poorly in a class, it's MY fault. Not the "undiagnosed ADHD please feel sorry or me" excuse. No the "OMG I'm having so many problems" excuse. It's called life, and everyone needs to start taking responsibility for their own actions.

That's part of the reason that if you have a group of female nurses, it turns into a gossip-fest, with catty, backstabbing behavior. If something goes wrong, TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTY. It's not the patient's fault, not their annoying family, not the CNA's. Yours.

I agree with everything you wrote but I really find it irritating that you lump all woman and nurses like this. I don't need to gossip and although I'm aware there are woman that do, the biggest gossip I know is my father-in-law obviously male. My point is I see a lot of this clumping of woman nurses on here and usually in the past I laugh because of course I know some woman that act like this but I also know many fellow female nurses and students that do not act anything like this and we can represent nursing just as well. Maybe these behaviours are more profound in different states or something, I don't know..

Im a "B" student and had a 3.29 GPA, applied and was accepted into a program. For CT community colleges they rank you by your GPA, Teas test score and Grade in A&P I~they had 32 spots and i got in~very pleased, excitied, anixous i start in Jan 2012~just got a job at the local hospital doing a "hands off" position called "Patient Observer"~its a foot in the door! Great things are coming! Good luck to all pursuing your dreams~

my high school gpa was a 3.0, i graduated about 30/220, and got a 28 on my ACT..i was the most average student you could probably find haha. i was in a good amount of EC's, sports, few leadership, a lot of community service, volunteered in my hospital ED, and had outstanding essays (which i believe got me to where i am now). i was accepted at all 13 nursing schools i applied to. i now attend the university of pittsburgh.
