Nursing students in NYC + CUNY: BMCC

Published

Does anyone have any thoughts about CUNY: BMCC and how difficult it is to get into the nursing program there? I am considering going to a private school after finishing my pre-reqs because I understand the competition with CUNY may be a problem....

Thanks for advice. When will you finish your pre-clinicals? I start mine this fall at Hunter, but now I am considering transfering to BMCC-----get the RN THEN go back to Hunter for part-time BSN program.....(so i can continue working)

Are you going t apply for the day or weekend RN at BMCC? are you 1199 member?

-In BMCC, its different, You first have to complete 4 Pre-clinical courses which are: Bio 425(Aanatomy and Physiology), Mat 104(Dosage Calculations), Psy 100, and English 101. When you taking these courses, you are a Liberal Arts Major. In order for your major to be changed to Preclinical is you need to have a good GPA(3.72 or 3.70) in these 4 preclinical courses, which I meantioned earlier. I just completed these 4 preclinical courses this Spring, and the department changed my major to pre-clinical Nursing. My Gpa was 3.72, I'm going for Evening. After you attain the status of a Preclinical Student, you may then apply for Clinicals and have good chances of getting in the Program. But in BMCC, After u become a Pre-clinical student, you must wait one semester to apply for your clinicals. So now I will apply in October to get in the January Semester. Till then I'll be taking AP2, Micro and Developmental Psychology for this fall. and also same here, After I get my RN, I will also be going for my BSN part time. Hope this helps.!!

Very helpful! with your GPA you are sure to get into the eveining program no problem-----i'm quite rusty in the science department!!!!!

Thanks for your response!

I am going into my clinicals as Bronx Community College in august, the program sounds about the same as BMCC you have to take AP1, eng101, pharmacology, etc and then take the PAX=RN . You need a high GPA and good scores on the Pax to get in, they also have a waiting list. I am kind of nervous because I have heard how intense these classes are. Oh well here goes nothing,

I think Medgar Evers like York college is for students who already have a Associate nursing degree and are looking to get a BSN.

I just got my acceptance letter from City Tech, starting clinicals in August. A lot of my classmates when I was taking pre-reqs were transfers from BMCC. They're frustrated with the waiting list.

I think all CUNY schools are really competitive though. I've heard great things about BMCC, they have a fantastic schedule if you're interested in working while going to school (late nights classes, saturdays, etc).

They don't have "space saved" for 1199 members as far as I know. City Tech got a grant from 1199 which allowed them to accept more students (110 instead of 80 for this fall), but you are still competing with everyone else for the spot.

Sounds like a program I maybe interested in, if I have a problem getting into BMCC's program. I only have A&P2 and Mico left. Can you send me some info. on their program..Thanks;)

I am in the evening program at BMCC. I have finished my pre recs BUT if you are a in the weekend program you have to finish your pre recs (somebody list them hire up) + a&p 426 and Micro. I called the department and asked for advice and that is what I was told. So now I have to finish them and apply for the program.

Yes, I am aware of that. I am starting A&P1 this fall 2007. Then I will only have A&P2 and micro. In the fall of 2008 is when I start micro, that's when I am going to see Mr. Sierra in the BMCC nursing dept. to apply for the weekend nursing program. I am an 1199 hopital union member, so I hope that works in my favor.;)

Good Luck at BCC. The nursing program is intense but doable. Make sure you join a study group. (It's a must).

Yes, I am going to apply for the BMCC weekend nursing program. I am also an 1199 member, so I hope that works in my favor. The director of the nursing dept. at BMCC ( Mr. Sierra) said they save 12 slots for 1199 members with the best GPA. Hopefully that will be me in the fall 2008 when I apply:o. I start A&P1 in the fall 2007, then I will just have A&P2 and micro left.

Were you in the weekend nursing program at BMCC? Was it really hard to get in, and do they have slots saved for 1199 members? I am taking A&P1 this fall 2007. Then I will just have A&P2 and micro left. When is the best time to see Mr. Sierra at BMCC when it's time for my clinicals?:o

Mr. Sierra pretty much won't talk to you until you have completed your pre-reqs and are ready to apply.

As I am sure you know, you are are required to take 4 pre-req classes:

Math 104 (dosage calculations)

Intro to Psych

Eng I (composition)

A&P I

These four classes make up your "nursing GPA".

Get A's in these four classes and you have a 4.0.

When it comes to BMCC accepting students into their nursing program they will start with students who have a GPA of 4.0 and go down until all the slots are filled. Therefore, if they accept 40 evening students, if there are 40 students who are applying who have a 4.0, then those students get in and the people with a 3.9 are out of luck. Just get A's in those four classes and make your life a lot less stressful.

GOOD LUCK!
