Does anyone have any thoughts about CUNY: BMCC and how difficult it is to get into the nursing program there? I am considering going to a private school after finishing my pre-reqs because I understand the competition with CUNY may be a problem....

;)I am attending BMCC on chambers st in the NYC. I am just about finished with my pre- req's. I'm alreading in the medical field, and a hospital union member. I hear the waiting list is beyond belief, but if you are a hospital union member they have spaces saved for us.
Thanks for responding! I am starting Hunter's pre-clincal this fall. But because I would rather go the faster route to RN and THEN pursue the BSN while working as an RN, I am considering transfering to BMCC--but concerned about the wait. I am also a union member (1199) but I hear it is difficult and the current entrance GPA is 3.89???? Do you like the classes at BMCC?
Thanks for info...

I am about to start the clinical sequence at Queensborough CC. I m not currently in the healthcare field. Yes there is competition at a CC but there is competition at a private school as well. You cannot run from it. Advice that I can give is to do well in your prereqs, no matter where you are. This gives you the best shot possible at a spot in the Community Colleges. Most that i know state that the higher your GPA is the better your chance may be. Also, I should add that you could have a 2.75 or a 3.2 and still get into a CC program. This is largely due to the the students that applied at the same time as you. If their GPA is on the low side as well this makes your chances even better. The latter though is based largely on the luck of the draw.
It is also my understanding that there is no 2 or 3 yr 'waiting list' at the CCs. If you are told u are on a waiting list, this is only for as long as the semester starts. If the semester starts and you were not call from the list you have to reapply.
Good luck dk.
thanks for info!!!!!

I just got my acceptance letter from City Tech, starting clinicals in August. A lot of my classmates when I was taking pre-reqs were transfers from BMCC. They're frustrated with the waiting list.
I think all CUNY schools are really competitive though. I've heard great things about BMCC, they have a fantastic schedule if you're interested in working while going to school (late nights classes, saturdays, etc).
They don't have "space saved" for 1199 members as far as I know. City Tech got a grant from 1199 which allowed them to accept more students (110 instead of 80 for this fall), but you are still competing with everyone else for the spot.
Thanks for responding. Does City Tech have an evening/weekend/part time program?
They do for the prereqs. I was working full time and was still able to take 14 credits per semester. I took most of my classes on Saturdays and I know they have sunday classes too.
Now that I got into the program, I will have to cut my work hours because the schedule is SO unflexible. They only offer morning hours for the nursing lecture and clinicals. So that kind of sucks....

They save 12 slots saved each semester for 1199 members with the highest GPA. BMCC has a great weekend/evening nursing program for all the hard working people out there. Where is city tech in the NYC? It sounds like a nursing program we should be looking into. I am taking A&P1 this fall 2007 along with English 201. God help me! This is my last pre-req. Congratulations on your acceptance to city tech. Good for you man. You will do great!

thanks. Do you know anything about Medgar Evers college? Hard to say from looking at the website if they offer part-time or evening nursing......I never hear anyone mention this school, but it seems it would be a good alt. to BMCC. Also looking into Beth Israel and Long Island Hospital who both have evening/part-time.
Thanks for sharing--any opinion-advice is helpful!

hi there,
I am also a preclinical student at BMCC. The current new Preclinical GPA for the day program is 3.72, and for the evening it's 3.70. My advice is dont listen to rumors, just contact the department and they should be able to give you all the required information.
-Good Luck
Thanks for advice. When will you finish your pre-clinicals? I start mine this fall at Hunter, but now I am considering transfering to BMCC-----get the RN THEN go back to Hunter for part-time BSN program.....(so i can continue working)
Are you going t apply for the day or weekend RN at BMCC? are you 1199 member?
