When is the government going to learn that there really isn't a nursing shortage, but a shortage of seasoned nurses willing to stick around for crummy pay and crummy treatment? Throwing money into nursing programs...

This 'nursing shortage' is also due to hospitals and managers not willing to train new nurses. There are plenty of qualified applicants. The gov needs to ask hospitals how many applicants they have vs how many nurses they have.
A hospital sets there own limitations on who they hire. So if they are short staffed, that is their own fault. If they require all these outlandish requirements, 4-5 years of experience, all these certifications, etc. these nurses with all these certs and experience aren't going to put up with mal treatment or funny business (ie. 'we're short staffed at the last minute, so here's another patient -who's trached, vented, low O2, 4-5 wounds, w/ unaddressed problems, etc. (It's not fair to the patient.)

Worse thing that happened to nursing was when entry level was made mostly universally BSN and the old, standard hospital based training ended. Now that the whole mid-level ship has come in, the bar to get into most legitimate BSN programs is as high as law school because people with the academic chops to basically do anything they want see nursing as a fast track to solid 6 figure salaries without the effort of other fields. No putting the toothpaste back in the tube now.

What do you consider "Crumbs money"? Not trying to pick a fight for sure - but curious as most nurses I know are in the top 20% of wage earners. Of course that's anecdotyl which we all know is the worst form of evidence.

I would say it's not the money, it's viewing nurses like factory workers with human beings on the assembly line, always looking for ways to increase efficiency and productivity. This makes nurses feel like they aren't paid adequately, but the truth is, I believe most would choose high value placed on quality of care delivery over more money.

In my state we are finding even new grads can't find a job. One particular hospital system has 74 RN postings but only for foreign trained (per the ad). They are going to beat us into submission one way or another for getting out of line and demanding better working conditions.
They do not hire seasoned nurses and they have bullied most of them out.
PRN wages have come down way lower than FT hourly wage, the commitment quadrupled and you simply can't find experienced nurses anymore unless. We have a glut of nurses, always have.
