Nursing shortage? MN does it exsist?

Unfortunately, MN does not have a shortage. In it's 2000 report the federal Health Department said MN wouldn't have a shortage for another ten years (2015). Even though there's a nationwide shortage which is expected to get worse, some states aren't yet short of nurses.

Yes, it is my understanding from talking to all kinds of other nurses in MN, there does not seem to be as much of a shortage in MN as in other states, they are nowhere as desperate as other states (yet anyways).

I don't know that the whole state of MN is attempting to unionize, but I do know that there are several individual hospitals in MN that are seriously talking about unionizing.

Some non-union hospitals who have always matched the union wages and benefits, have now put a freeze on any wage increases, meanwhile, the union hospital nurses have gotten raises etc... and these hospitals are not because of the freeze.

This has several of the nurses at these facilites very upset and union talk is quite active right now.

...I hate to ruin your party but if I am correct the University if MN is one of the only major hospitals in minneapolis that is not nor has been unionized. All of the other hospitals are and have been for some time.

You can find employers that will give you only nights for sure. I had to rotate for about a year with three weeks days and one week nights and every third weekend.

Eventually I got only days when I had been there awhile-

I currrently live in Texas. This past Sunday, I got the local paper and their is not one nursing want ad.

There are shortages in some parts of Texas, but not where I live. Nursing jobs are low paying and hard to find in my Texas neck-of-the-woods.

Some states, Kansas for instance, have a surplus of nurses.

I live 2 hours north of the cities and I can't find a job. Oh wait, I take that back (this is funny). I did get offered this "great job" according to the caller at LTC. I have no desire to work LTC but I thought finally after 5 months of nothing, I'm finally getting an interview. Just before we're going to schedule me to come in and talk with her, she says, "oh, I should tell you one more thing. This is an LPN position but we'd LOVE to have an RN fill it. But the pay is $12.00 to $13.00/hr." I politely declined and told her to call me when they "have an RN position that pays RN wages." Ridiculous! Bottom line is that I've heard thru word of mouth that new grads (no experience) are having difficulties getting into any hospitals in the cities and here. So for the past month I've been working with recruiters and I have an interview in AZ next Fri. I think I will call some hospitals in the cities though just to be sure that I'm hearing correct information. I've been trying to 6 months to get a job where I live and I've had it. So we're ready to make the move. I think if you have experience it's a different story. I sincerely hope you have better luck than I do. I like the Twin Cities area - lived there for 5 years a while back. Good luck

Do you have a bachelors or associates? Where did you go to school? I'd be interested to know how things are working out. I'm from the cities, and juat embarking on my nursing school journey (still doin prereqs).

Wow, I can only imagine how hard it has been for you to have looked for 6 months and nothing. I hope things work out for you in AZ, I know there is a need for nurses there and some places have bonus money for moving. Please let us know how it goes for you.

Recently moved from TX - worked CVICU, worked a weekend plan for $34.00 hr. Moved to Willmar, MN and there is one RN position. Wow how did MN avoid the nursing shortage? What is up with rotating shifts? Why would anyone want to flip-flop their life like that? Sorry had to vent! I'm frustrated! I thought once i had that degree I could get a job anywhere. Is MN attempting to unionize? I've read the MN nursing *** web-site and it appears unionization is high priority. I'm just trying to get a feel for what is going on with nursing in this state. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Call out to the Willmar Regional Treatment Center. They are always looking for nurses with Psych experience. Even though MN Mental Health is transitioning to community based services there is definitely a demand for nurses. Otherwise check out the MN DOER website.

I am surprized to know there is so little need. I am interested in the area also, but not when I can do so well some other places. I am also surprized that more nurses in MN are not tempted to travel. i have been to Willmar, and it seems to be a nice, quaint town.
