I am starting my ADN in September and would like to get some comfortable nursing shoes that will last. In my former life, I wore steel-toed shoes to work every day, so I am used to UGLY shoes. Any advice and/or recommendations are appreciated.

My wife has been a nurse for 12 years - she swore by S.A.S. shoes and so did many of her co-workers. Lately she has been having a worsening problem with her feet. I finally convinced her to go to a podiatrist, who told her S.A.S. and many other of the nursing shoes are terrible on your feet. He said New Balance running shoes are the way to go. You want a shoe with good arch support and that is extremely stiff if you try to bend it in the arch area. Since she switched two weeks ago, her months-old foot pains have dramatically improved. Dave
I've worn birkenstocks for 17 years, and so of course my first pair of nursing shoes are the white professional birkenstocks. I couldn't think of anything better for me to wear in the demands I'll be making on my feet hehe
Sure they aren't pretty, but the comfort makes up for it, they have clogs and all kinds of diff pairs, I am hoping to get a pair of clogs also, mine are tie ups.
I was wearing Birkenstocks, and I loved them. They were so comfortable and wore well. However, when I broke my leg, and was finally able to go back to work, for some reason, I could not tolerate them anymore. The podiatrist and the orthopedic surgeon both recommended Sketchers. I have been wearing Sketchers since. They are great!!
I like my Dansko's. I got them at a nearby outlet store for half the retail price so they were definitely worth the price.I HATE my NurseMates that I got for school. After 2 hours, my feet and legs are already hurting.
I just purchased a pair of Dansko from the online outlet store, for 30% off. I had a pair of nurse mates and and they are awful. I thought I was getting a good pair of shoes, but by the time the day is over I can barely walk my feet hurt so bad. I am hoping that Dansko will work better
I finally was able to get out & get myself a pair of Crocs... they're black, more for everyday.. have myself on a list for white ones for work. If they don't come in, maybe I'll get them online, because they place that sells them (a Hallmark store) is the only place arond here that sells them. :-) They are SO light & comfy, I love them!!
I also love my Dansko's!! The only thing I've worn since starting nursing school and I wouldn't trade them- as a matter of fact I want to buy another pair. Got mine through zappos.com. You can also try Ebay & other places.
My school doesn't allow backless/clogs so I got one of the occupational styles:
Quarks? I've never heard of those, do you have a link? Lightweight sounds good
Zappos has them. I just ordered a pair:

For something with the word "nurse" in it, Nursemates have to be the most uncomfortable shoes i've ever tried on.
