Nursing school while pregnant?

Published

I know this has been asked before but I would like to hear from people who have done it, or not. I have been on the waitlist to start nursing school for over a year, and it took nearly two years to get all the prereqs they required done. I have a spot to start this Fall. I just found out I'm pregnant with my 2nd child (1st is 4 and will be in daycare). My initial reaction was I should give up my spot in the course because there's no way its possible. However, I really want to do this! I would be due over winter break and probably have a week or two before my second semester would start. My last pregnancy was uneventful and baby came on time.

Should I just wait another year to start? Or should I go for it? How did you find clinicals while pregnant? My school has clinical usually from 8-4 twice a week. I will also have the option of doing some online lectures on days I can't make class in person. So torn on what to do :(

Congratulations! I had my first baby during the program. She was born the 1st day of spring break, and then I took an extra week off. Clinicals were not bad at all; much less physical than my shifts working as a CNA. I worked it out with my dept. chair that I would be placed in the clinical group who did their shifts earlier in the semester -- that way I was able to adhere to my CNM's recommendation not to work until 6 weeks postpartum. I'm sure I also had an easier time studying with a newborn/crawler than I would have with a toddler too. Newborns don't scale the fridge (true story!)

I think if you have the motivation you will be able to do it! I'm in my first semester and a classmate of mine is pregnant and she is doing fine. Yes, nursing school is hard but with the right mind set you can do anything. Don't give up, especially if you have been waiting for so long to start nursing school. If your clinicals are anything like mine it won't be too bad. My first semester clinical consisted of administering shots and ambulating people to the bathroom. It wasn't super exhaustive. Congrats on the pregnancy and congrats on getting a spot!
