Hello,
Today our instructor just informed us that on October 10 or 11th that we have to find our own clinical site to make up 8 clinical hours. This is because the Nurse manager failed to correctly map out required time for clinical. October 10th/11th are days students have off. Our teacher originally had us staying later at the hospitals to make up this time. However, they refuse to pay over time.
Most places have contracts with nursing schools for clinicals . Most places also require a background check in healthcare to even volunteer. There are liability and privacy issues. I might not even be able to make up this time if a place wont accept a nursing student.
I feel that if the school messed up than they should find a way to incorporate this time back into our schedule or find a clinical site for us.
I agree with everyone else, the school needs to figure this out. We are not allowed to have any patient contact without our instructor on the floor. Period. We got the night before to get patient assignments but we are not allowed to have any contact with patients or so much as hand an on-duty RN, LPN, Aide, a trash bag. You are not employed by the facility so who would be held liable if something (God forbid) happened to a patient you were taking care of on this non-clinical clinical day? No thanks!! Good luck to you :) :)
I would contact the BON or something honestly. Isn't it a rule that students cannot go without instructors???????? Like a BIG RULE.
Don't let them eff around with your time, ya know? Nursing school already consumes you. They messed up, and the last thing you wanna do is screw up because of them.
Wouldn't this open the school up to a potential lawsuit if someone fails because they did not get their time in? People sue for less and it would seem like the school is failing to provide a service if the person cannot get their time in due to the school's error (like the school was unable to provide a clinical site)

Your same floor may welcome the help on another day, just ask. They are already use to you so I would ask around in the same hospital. Also, I would send a note to the Dean of Nursing, informing her of the situation, as there may be insurance issues with students going to places that are not set up with contracts, insurance, etc. to handle this. If someone get's hurt, and there is no professor around who is responsible the hospital, the school, the student. It could really cause a lot of needless trouble.
