nursing or pre-med.

Published

I've studying to become a nurse and i am going to start clinicals next spring. But lately i have been wondering about going to med school. I'm 23 with 2 kids, i don't know if it's too late to switch to pre-med.

Do any of you know someone who waited to begin a pre-med program?

... i feel so undecieded i just wanted to hear some different points of view before i make a decision.

thanx.

If I were that young and able to wing it, I would go the route of pre-med. It will be a lot harder, but in the end you will have a good, solid career that will certainly support you and your two kiddos, and you'll have a lot less drama and disrespect to deal with. I would have gone the MD route if I had been younger. Nursing isn't bad, as far as careers go, but doctors have a lot more autonomy and respect from the public and those they work with. I'm not sorry I chose nursing as it is a better fit for my life, but if I had been younger, I would have gone the MD route.

i'm considering finsihing my a.s. in nursing while i complete some of my pre-med courses. thanx for the adivice. every little bit of encouragement helps.

I think you should go to Medical school. My sister-in-law was a pharmacist. She graduated from Pharmacy school with no debt in the bank, all her school tuition was paid. If she worked as a pharmacist , she would be rich by now, but she realized that becoming MD was her true calling. She decided to come back to medical school, and wasted all those years in pharmacy school. Everybody thought she was crazy, but she did it. She graduated from medical school 3 years ago, and she never regret even thought she has a huge debt now. She came back to medical school when she was 28. It is never too late if you want to be a doctor. I would be happy for you if you can be a doctor and help people ( I really admire doctors and nurses). Good luck!

If don't mind me asking what area did she go into.

If i do decide to go to med school, i don't have the slightest idea what concentration to go into.

I know several MDs who used their BSN as their pre-med requirements and now work as MDs. They worked as RNs during semester breaks.

She goes into internal medicine. After finishing her residency, she will specialize in vascular medicine. She was not accepted the first time she applied even thought she already got her doctor degree in pharmacy. She came back the second times and showed them that she really wanted to be an MD. Medical school is really hard to get in, but don't give up even if you can't get in the first time.

P_RN,

This is a great ideal if any RN decides to go the MD route instead NP or CNS route...this is great to have during breaks to keep some a money flow during the breaks.

Something to consider if I am ever in this situation when I get close to the end of my nursing program.

Thanks for sharing!:)

Thanks P_RN for sharing it with student nurse. That's why I love this site. So much info out there, people sharing their wisdom with others they don't even know:hug:

i am 18 and have been contemplating the same thing. i have no kids but i am scared of getting into debt in med school. i have such an interest in medicine and i'm also scared of the responsibility that comes with being a doctor. i'm scared to tell my parents too but i've been contemplating if nursing is really the right thing? good luck to you, i hope we can both figure it out!

I work in a teaching hospital that is crawling with residents all the time, and many of them are in their 30s, 40s, or even older. People of all ages are going to medical school nowadays. 23 is certainly not "too late" if that's what you really want to do (many of them have children, also).

You might want to consider an exciting career in electronics, I don' think it is very scary... :) Okay, sure we are all scared to venture into something new, but that is what shapes us into what we become. So do you want to be a timid little mouse or a noble participant in your community? This is the time to squeak up...
