Dropping Dilaudid Carpuject on Sterile Field

Nurses Medications

Published

So I've searched everywhere, and can't find anything on this. The Dilaudid Carpuject vial says sterile cartridge on it, and comes in a plastic clear tube as you probably know. Is there any reason why it couldn't be dropped in on a sterile field?

Those break easy I would not drop it for that reason. I am unsure as to whether it is ok otherwise. The best bet would be to have the person who is sterile draw it out with a sterile syringe while you hold it.

I am fairly certain you could dump ten thousand carpuject cartridges on a sterile field without any of them breaking.

Maybe true, but 20,000 mg dilaudid is an awful lot of narcotics.

Why would you drop it on a sterile field?? Just seeing where it would be needed. I don't really see a doc pushing it in a sterile set up. Am I missing something?? And yes, the glass vials break very easy if dropped from any distance. I've broke many.

I think I'm confused as to what you're asking. The second you pull it from the machine, with your hands, it's not sterile any longer?! So no, you couldn't drop it in a sterile field.

The carpujects we have are sealed in a little plastic tube, so you could dump them out. As others have pointed out, not sure why it would be necessary.

Oh yes! Ty. I'm picturing the little stopper vials duuuuhhhh me

Well apparently you haven't had any break on you as I have!

The only thing sterile in a carpuject is the medication inside the glass vial. The outside of the vial is not sterile. Therefore, it should NOT be dropped onto a sterile field.

As an example: you're setting up a spinal by your self and want to have your syringe with marcaine and dialysis ready to go. Not a big deal to just wait for someone just wondering since the vial says sterile cartridge and is in a sealed plastic tube.
