Jacksonville U. vs U.of Phoenix

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some advice. I want to obtain my Masters online in education. I'm having trouble choosing between these 2 online programs. Jacksonville University and University of Phoenix both sound great. Prices are just about the same. The only difference I'm finding is that UOP provides books, etc online and Jacksonsville I have to buy the textbooks. Has anyone done either program and can offer some advice? Are there group projects? Thanks!

I would go with Jacksonville, only because (I believe) it's not a for-profit institution, and UoP doesn't have the best reputation.

Have you looked into ?

No I haven't looked into that one but I will. I looked at Chamberlain, but they're not calling me back so I'm not really interested in them anymore. I didn't know Phoenix had a bad rep. :( Thanks!

Chamberlain is also for-profit, VERY high priced. You should not have to spend more than about $12,000-15,000 for an MSN program. Look around, there are much better options than UoP or Chamberlain.

Here, this thread should be helpful to you, many of these schools also have MSN programs online:

Fort Hays State University online MSN: $251/credit

Eastern New Mexico University online MSN: $222/credit

Lamar University online MSN: $318/credit

I would avoid University of Phoenix, Jacksonville U, and other investor-owned schools because the educational products aren't worth the outrageous tuition.

Ah, didn't know Jacksonville was also a for-profit!

Wow thanks. The rep at Jacksonville said they are not for-profit. And someone else told me Lamar was good too. I'll keep looking.

Jacksonville is not for profit.

Just because a school is private doesn't make it for profit.

Yikes, $650 a credit hour for MSN Online.. Too rich for me. :) OP, check out commuter's post above + there's always .

Is there any reason why you are looking at Online only option? Online Programs are convenient, but the quality of the education process at a lot of Online Institutions are questionable. I would definitely rule out University of Phoenix and any of the For-Profit Universities. IMHO, I would look at Local Universities that have Online Programs, since Tuition is lower (in most cases) and are more reputable than their out of state peers (better name recognition).

Also, why MSN in Education versus NP? I have family members who have done a pure MSN degree and felt they didn't learn anything of value or any marketable skill sets from doing that program.

Perhaps OP doesn't wasn't to be a NP. MSN Education opens doors to becoming a clinical nurse educator or a professor in nursing schools. If OP wants to teach, MSN Education is what s/he needs.

It's not a "pure" MSN degree, whatever that is. It has a concentration, in education.
