Nursing Officers in the Canadian Forces

World Canada

Published

Hi everyone! New here!

I am an RN in NB, Canada. I am really hoping to find a couple of NOs out there whose brains I can pick about the position. My concerns are that the job is widely administrative more than it is hands-on. Presently I'm an Emergency Nurse, and before that I worked in ICU, so I enjoy the "excitement" of traumas and sick individuals (I know, it's awful to say). I've done a lot of research about the process and the position, but I would really like to speak with some actual Nursing Officers to get their perspectives and points of view, if possible.

It's a big decision and I'm trying to do as much research as possible. If you're an NO or have a close friend or family who is, I'd love to talk to you if you'd be willing. Here or over email!

Thanks in advance!

dpcRN, I received your your pm...I'm in the middle of a course right now but I'll get something off to you in the next day or two. NewtoOR...are you at VGH? We have a pretty small unit there but I may know somebody that still works there. I take it by your user name that you are an OR nurse?

Specializes in Critical Care.

No rush! Thanks a million :)

Hi AirForceRN,

Thanks for your response. I've been independently taking perioperative theory courses the past year. I'm with Vancouver Coastal Health but not VGH.

Hi!

I am also in the Vancouver area, working at VGH, I am interested in joining the CF as well and would love the opportunity to speak with an RO if possible. Thanks for all your great info already!

Sorry for the bump. I'm interested too but I can't pm yet.

If you want to apply for ROTP it's very competitive. It's easier if you apply for direct entry. For 2014, they have 6 positions for ROTP (which is paid schooling) 77 students applied. As far as direct entry, less people applied, since you'll get paid more in a civil hospital working as a part-time nurse with all the over time, you make away more than a nurse in the Army.

I'm already a nurse though. Just not licensed yet with Quebec.

You didn't return to the other thread where you asked similar questions.

Are you a Canadian Citizen? That is the main requirement for military service.

I lost the link to that. I'll try to look for it.

Not yet though. I still have to receive my AOR.

I estimate I'll be able to get my licenses updated. Somebody said a minimum of 5 years of permanent residency is now needed before applying for citizenship.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Currently under review and there are changes coming but not in place yet.

joing the Reserves is different from going reg force. Talk to a recruiter. Reserve is very regional. Have you visited your local field ambulance unit?
