Nursing is not what it is made out to be..

Nurses General Nursing

If your thinking of going to school to become a nurse please take a moment to reflect on my experiences during the 17 years I have been in nursing. To be honest up front, nurses are treated like dogs. If you have the compassion to take care of others then thats awesome but I must warn you that no one is going to foster that compassion once your in the real world. You will be expected to never make a single error and even to the point as having to consistently correct a physicians mistake. Oh yea, thats right. You must tell the physicians what needs to be done all the time and catch all their errors or else you the nurse will be punished or scolded. Most of you who are not a nurse probably think nursing is very rewarding. Wrong again. Nurses are not commended for a good job done because it is expected even when you correct errors there is no special recognition. Also the attitudes of todays patients aren't very grateful but can be downright mean and hateful towards nurses. Furthermore, physicians hardy even assess their patients adequately leaving you to wonder if the doctor really saw everything with the patient that needs to be assessed. For instants any skin issues or wounds. Most of what is the duty of the MD the nurses wind up doing.

Look, I can go on and on but here is some helpful info to help you decide if you wanna be a nurse for the rest of your lives.

Do a google search for "the truth about nursing" and see what comes up. This is a great way to see just how awful the nursing profession is.

Thank you, and good luck choosing a career.

Just as a reminder, I wasn't asking for anyones opinion or discussion.I am aware that not everyone will feel the way I do. I am only a portion of many perspectives out there and I just wanted to share *MY* experiences with others who may be considering nursing as a career. Just because you guys feel different does not mean my perspective shouldn't be treated with any less value.

Then why come on a forum & make a thread? Or am I missing something???

YOU are a true caring nurse..all you others that feel the need to belittle my situation should listen and learn! Im outta here.

Well, now that she's gone I can add to the current discussion. Brilliant advice: If you don't want replies don't post to a public discussion board! Cry your little heart out to your diary then go back to doing the same thing that got you miserable in the first place.

The advice I always heard (and live by); If you can't find something satisfying in nursing, you're not trying very hard.

I cannot fault the OP. The post accurately described my few years as an RN, though I approach nursing from a more pragmatic and less bitter perspective. Ask me again in 15 years and I will probably feel the same as the OP.

Anyone still playing Flounce Bingo? I think I could check off a few squares here...

Nursing is a serving position at the end of the day and if you look up what serving means you will have a better peace of mind of what you signed yourself up for. I don't think you hate it, I just think you are tired and frustrated. You could have left it along time ago but you stayed with it which says a lot. It takes a special type of person to do this kind of work. I like serving people but I plan to do it in another way so that my time, caring and concern, match my pay. I am going for MD. I left med-surg and am now a psych nurse. I have a better peace of mind and it is my niche. I plan to be a psychiatrist.

Specializes in as above.

I love nursing and as an older nurse found that hospitals do not want older nurses. I went to work in the field over 20 years ago and want to return to hospital nursing. I would love to have a hospital retrain me to work a schedule when they need coverage. I have over 34 years of nursing experience and was told I was obsolete and not wanted in a hospital. Those were the words exactly.... by one of the major hospital systems in the North Georgia System that has gobbled up many smaller systems. I have many talents to give but the hospital will not look at me......what can one do....when nursing has given up on me but I have not given up on nursing.....in my earlier years I was a surgical supervisor, ER supervisor, floor nurse and many other positions but that was 25 years ago but surely basics of caring have not changed.

Threads like these make me long for the "I'm seeing a lot of tall nurses" post.

As a tall nurse, I thank you. Maybe I'll post one---would one FROM a tall nurse count?

I'm wondering if the OP's anger shows through to coworkers and patients? I wouldn't want to be either to one who is this bitter.

I wonder if they had struggles in nursing school getting along with fellow students faculty, etc. This sounds like a pattern of coping?
