3 nursing jobs in 2 years. Unhirable?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Without getting into too much detail:

I've had 3 jobs.

1. Assisted living facility: Fired after 2 years

2. Clinic: Quit after 3 months

3. Assistant living facility: Fired after 3 months

My resume looks bad. I wanted to not include my last job but when recruiters ask what I did during those 3 months, i reallly don't know what to say. I really don't want to discuss why I got fired (you can view my post to see how bad of a nursing I am).

At at my Core, I love my job and feel that with all the lessons I've learned, I will be a great fit someone else if given the opportunity. I am working for an agency as a per diem nurse and my job was cancelled this morning. I am afraid of not being able to pay my bills.

Thanks to to all in advance

I'm sorry I didn't mean to come off short. I struggle with med errors. I know it's because I'm not organized and I promise to myself that I will be. Maybe nursing isn't right for me like Annie said

Or private duty 1:1 nursing. Less patients = better opportunity to be more organized and keep track. Home health may be an option as it is one patient at a time.

However, based on past posts, maybe some inward reflection may be in order too. Why do you feel unorganized when it comes to medications? Is there a knowledge deficit? Is it a policy issue at the facilities? Could you benefit from a check-off sheet to help keep you on task?

I've read some of your other threads as well. Maybe it's time to consider a different career. There's no shame in deciding something isn't your cup of tea. Quit beating yourself up about it.

I personally think agency nursing is a bad idea for a struggling nurse with anxiety issues.

Try extended care home health and be frank, (to a point), about your desire to rebuild your confidence (or whatever you see as your main stumbling block) with one stable patient requiring routine care. Many of these routine cases are pediatric patients who may be bedbound and nonverbal. Perhaps they have a g tube and/or a trach. Their parents are usually grateful to find a nurse willing to work with their child. Whatever the situation, you will only have to deal with one patient for your shift. This will give you time to work on improving whatever is troubling you about your practice. Who knows? You may find that you like working with this population and you may have a new niche in nursing. Best wishes.

3 jobs in two years isn't great but being fired from two is beyond reason. You need to get your mental health issues under control before anything else happens.

Nursing is the only thing I love and keeps me going for lack of better words. I'm afraid of what's gonna happen if I give up on it

This is disturbing to hear. Your job should not be your reason to live. You NEED help and now!!

I agree with Wuzzie. I think it's time to step back from nursing for a bit and get your bearings. Find any job to keep the bills paid. Meanwhile, reflect on what it is that's getting in the way of your nursing career. Do you need mental health help to get your anxiety under control? Do you need some remedial nursing classes to address some holes in your original nursing education?

I think the answers will come more easily to you if you take a break from nursing and give yourself some breathing room. Hang in there.

I've been to many psychologists and many SSRIs. You are not in the position to say what I need because I'm still getting help. If you find my comment disturbing then that's your opinion. I was bullied all my life and told I was too dumb to be a nurse and graduating nursing school was my proudest moment.

^ Alrighty, and with that comment, yup, gonna be another one of those threads.

Am I able to keep my license if I am not working as a nurse?

Ok, there are other ways to help people than just nursing. Step back, breathe and do some inward reflection. If you choose to continue with nursing you will have to find your way based on possibilities in your area. You know what is right for you. But do consider some of the suggestions here as well. Only trying to be helpful here. Obviously, you are smart enough to pass NCLEX so you got this. You just need to regroup & find your niche.
