personality tests???

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I applied at St. Lukes in houston for an ICU job. They said they were needing nurses badly. When I applied they had me take a "survey" which actually was a personality test of some sort. It asked the same questions over and over but in different fashions concerning violence in the workplace, drugs, theft. I FAILED. They said I did not pass and therefore would not be considered at this time but to feel free to try again(?). I was floored and could not imagine what had happened and they would not answer. Has anybody ever had this happen and what do you think of this?

Exactly! Thanks for posting.

IMHO a personality test is a diagnostic tool interpeted by a psychologist.

When one is in the process of an application I could see this as a situation of duress and not truly informed consent.

Had the employer explained prior to the application process that this would be done different story.

Of course it is the employers right to administer a test however it all depends on certain criteria ie a lie detector test here in NY is illegal for an employer to administrate to a potential employee or a person already employed.

However if informed consent is not signed for and all the reprecussions as well as benifits not explained and a copy of said test results given then I think legal remedy is to be considered.

It cost this person a job -- were they explained what test it was who graded it, how it was graded, what was the final diagnoisis, was a referal done since they found some pathology or problem with her/his personality and that she could have a copy of the results?

To me if they acted reasonably then there would be no pursuit of this however from the OP I did not think reasonable nor prudent actions were done.

When someone has damages done and thier basic rights violated in such a way as the OP said I think they need advice. For the very least to let the employer know that they are treading on thin ice -- sometimes that may take a letter from an attorney and not just the applicant who in the employers view failed one of thier test.
