Outpost Nursing - RPN

So I've heard a lot about outpost Nursing & the excellent experience nurses get flying out there, not to mention the great pay I've heard they receive.

Are RPN's able to do this? and if so, where do I get more information about it?

Thanks in advance!

Well, I'm no expert on this, but I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that I have seen threads on here and job postings in the past for regular part-/full-time RPN positions at outpost hospitals...

Check the Bayshore website, I know they send nurses up north on contracts, but again not sure about RPNs. Good luck!!

PS

I noticed that you have 2 years experience...I know for the RNs they want you to have several years experience to do outpost nursing because you're essentially alone. Your assessment skills need to be better than top notch.

Just a note: I googled "Outpost practical nurse ontario" and didn't get the greatest results, but a few links down there is a PDF from St Lawrence College about the practical nurse program and lists outpost as a career opportunity so keep looking :)

I know a nurse that does outpost nursing and she says she has never heard of a company hiring RPNs for this type of nursing. She says that generally you are alone and you need to be an RN.

I too know someone who does outpost nursing (in fact she works for Bayshore) and her view is: "up here you work as an NP pretty much..." so it seems unlikely that an RPn/LPN would be working within their scope of practice in that environment.

Chiming into agree with Lori and Jan. Every nurse I've ever met who has worked in the Far North has been an RN (and then they have become NPs due to their experiences up there).

I know that Yellowknife had LPNs in their hospitals but not out in the settlements.

Hi, Yes there are outpost RPN jobs available since I am an RPN and just accepted a job in Moose Factory. Good Luck

You can northern nursing but not outpost nursing. RN's are hired because they work at an extended scope and usually there is minimal supervision by MD's... If u want northern nursing then look at the northern hospitals.. I spent a year in Attawapiskat and now I am in moose Factory.. Depending on your experience you may or may not learn something.. I have enjoyed my time in the North but there are issues as well..

Are you a Registered Practical Nurse or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse? If you are a practical nurse you can look into postings at the Rankin Inlet hospital, the Gjoa Haven Continuing Care Centre, or the Igloolik Continuing Care Centre. If you are a psych nurse then you can work as the mental health nurse in the communities, either through the Government of Nunavut or agency (Bayshore or Venture).

I am a registered practical nurse.. I will look into that.. I have been applying for yrs and no call back.. I will send my resume directly to those places and see what happens.. My goal is to get up to Nunavut, NWT and yukon
