True ER stories

Nurses Humor

Published

Our ER gets lots of calls from residents in our rural area. One day a lady called and said her daughter had spilled some vinegar on herself earlier that day and now she has a red rash. The nurse who answered the phone said, "well I've never heard of a rash from vinegar, but I guess it's possible."

Another old ER nurse said, "Ask her if it was boiling at the time it spilled on her."

The rest of us burst into laughter. He said, "I've been doing this long enough, you gotta ask."

So the nurse on the phone asked, "Was it hot?"

The caller replied, "Yeah, it's been real hot here today."

You just gotta shake your head.

Overheard in the ER, says one family member to another, "they took mom down for a "cap" scan of her head."

Why is it that at 2 am on a Saturday night, that four month old back injury suddenly requires medical intervention? And why do you have to bring six family members in dire need of personal hygiene measures along? And if it hurts so bad, how can you talk and laugh loudly while eating corn chips and drinking Pepsi on your way out the door for a quick smoke (since the doc can't see you for 10 minutes anyway)?!

God, I love this job!

Some RN friends of mine directed me to this site and I have to agree with them: this is disturbing. The only good thing I can say is that it went unused for a few years.

While there may not be direct HIPAA violations, a patient trusts and believes that what happens to them stays between them and the caregiver. To find these 'humorous' stories posted here shows a lack of sensitivity and professionalism. These days nurses are taking a fair amount of hits regarding patient dignity, and posts such as these show why.

Any strides that respectful caregivers are making to rebuild patient trust is certainly being eroded here. Patients already face humiliation and embarrassment in intimate situations, but to laugh at them and retell their stories behind their backs further adds to this humiliation.

Most of these 'funny' stories involve genitals, rectums, and embarassment for the patient, and sharing those stories is a travesty.

At least some patients have trust that these situations carry a degree of privacy and understanding. After reading that some caregivers add further to their humiliation by laughing at them is shameful, and leaves them with no degree of dignity and humanity.

Kudos to those of you who refuse to post here. Shame on you for those who do.

I just can not believe moderaters allow such degrading behavior.

I am a nursing student and I just took my HIPAA exam. Because of that I know that you are just not allowed to disclose personal information about someone if you also disclose their name or other information like it. It isn't against any laws or rules to say "guys I had this crazy guy today. ttooootallly made a sculpture out of his boogers". that is okay as long as you dont say "hey this guy Ted." or "this guy at gothem hospital" or "this guy who is related to obama".

it is the same thing with psychologists. They can say "I had a patient that was raped as a child and has these issues, here is a picture they drew." as long as I don't know anything that could lead me to track down that person it is not violating anything.

Please be informed before you make a big skunk about something that doesn't need to be this big of an issue.

Thank you :)

also, I would just like to say that this is based off of my state and the specific hospitals around me. I am not sure if it is the same in every state but here, this is okay to do.

It's not state, it's federal, and it applies everywhere.

There's a whole forum on HIPAA here.

Meanwhile, there's not a thing in this thread that identifies personal health information.

Good to know!! I am glad it is Federal. Things like this should really be nation wide.

These are simply amazing :wacky:

I may not be a RN but I am a PCT in a hospital or a ERT at times and its not that we are taking away there dignity its more like we are sharing stories to let people know what we have been threw and let them learn from what we have delt with in our rooms and hospitals..... its more like letting others know what to expect when your in this line of work.... it helps me understand what brought the pt into the hospital in the first place. and how it happened....

Some girl decided to blast our ER on Facebook. Turns out that I was there that day and we took really good of the patient. The patient basically was crazy and sold her a sob story that was full of crap. Like cameras verified our version of events such as the patient claims to have been in the waiting room after discharge 12 times the length of time she was there. She basically didn't want to wait for a cab the hospital paid for to show up so she convinced someone to take her home.

I also think I took care of her mom and her mom had an EKG done and blood work drawn. It was not cardiac pain. The mom decided she wanted to stay so she suddenly had weakness that appeared to occur only when we were testing her hand grasps or feet pushes/pulls. She had strength to walk to the bathroom, change into gown, hold objects with ease, etc when we weren't testing her. However, the doctor said screw it and convinced an admitting doctor to admit her because she wasn't going to go home.

I know of a patient who escaped from a mental hospital, was going down the road in a wheelchair clothed in a hospital gown. He went to a very expensive car dealer, and purchased an AUDI.

Back when I worked in a rural ER, an old-ish farmer came in for a nasty leg injury. Not only had he been plowing his field in the dead of night; he was also three sheets to the wind. As the overalls came off, it was discovered that he was wearing a bright, bedazzled neon pink thong. He vehemently denied that it was his after he sobered up ...

I'm sure he was just "holding it for a friend."

The most memorable memory I have from my time in the ER is when a known prostitute came in complaining about lower abdominal pain. We thought it was from her many known STDs so we escorted her back to a room and told her to change so the doctor can do a pelvic exam. A few minutes later we go into the room almost being knocked down by the odor coming from her. She assumes the position and I stood behind the doctor assisting. As he opens her up we both almost pass out because as we bring the light closer we see dozens of maggots crawling around in her lady parts. She proceeds to tell us that "business" had been slow and she needed to get off so she stuck canned tuna up her so a dog can lick it out and get her off.

I'm sure he was just "holding it for a friend."

Must have gotten dressed in the dark. Probably his wife's. :sarcastic:
