I'm graduating in May, and have been contacting several hospitals for my first nursing job.
Boy, did I get a reality check regarding benefits!
I had no idea that nurses were expected to share in the cost of their health insurance. Insurance that had poor coverage and huge deductibles! I know I'm a newbie, but surely I thought hospitals would provide excellent care for its CAREGIVERS! I was so wrong. And it doesn't stop there.
Dental insurance, non-existent, or fully paid for by the employee. :stone
Long term disability or short term disability, you guessed it, paid for by the employee. :stone
Last but, not least, what's this business of having employees PAY to park?
What are your benefits like? Any tips on negotiating better benefits at the time of hire?
All comments welcome, thanks!
I am part time so I have absolutely no bennies. However it is not great for full timers either. Most of us are LPN's and we make dang good money ave 17hr but the ins is nearly $800 per month for family coverage. There is no retirement or disability plan whatsoever for anyone. We get paid double time and a half for holidays but if you dont work the holiday you dont get paid for it at all. We dont get sick time, we do get PTO hrs but it accrues at about the rate of 1hr PTO time for every 48hrs worked. We do not get shift diffs and there are no other benifits. It took me 2.5yrs to accumulate 2 weeks of vacation and PTO time together just so I could get my gallbladder removed and get paid for it. At least around here it is rare for nurses to get very good benefits anywhere. But then why should we we are only on the front lines of keeping America alive and well.
i read on previous posts about having to pay to park.Omg!That just floored me!I had never heard of anything like that!We have 1 small hospital in each county,so 3 in about 40 miles.I don't think we have to worry about that anytime soon, but goodness knows i hope they never find out about this.another idea to make the almighty dollar-lol.

I remember hearing about the days where hospital employees had to pay peanuts for really good healthcare coverage. Not so anymore!!! My kid brother installs and services windows, and his benefits are better than mine. My mother crunches numbers, and her benefits are better than mine. How depressing!
I am the only one covered under my policy. When my siggy other get hitched (he is in investments), I might cancel mine and get added to his, becuase his benefits are better than mine as well. ~sniff, sniff~
The only advantage to working for a hospital as far as healthcare goes, is that you know which doctors are good, and which ones you wouldn't even allow to treat your cat. Just my "o".
