Nursing & website is depressing!!!

i've noticed a trend on this board. nurses on this board dont like being nurses and it is very sad and discouraging. everyday i check out this board to see what people are talking about. there are always threads about "quitting 4 months into nursing, why are they all leaving, what career would you have chosen if you werent a nurse, help new job and miserable already, anyone quit a job to go into nursing and then regretted making the decision, etc,etc,etc. i read these threads and it makes me very scared about the future of nursing. something has to be done!! i've been a nurse for 8 months. and im starting to feel the same way. when people say wow you have your bsn. i think to myself who cares, nurses get treated like crap. today i had to call about 8 different doctors, a dialysis nurse, case manager who had no clue what to do, and inform them on the care of the patient. this is why so many people leave nursing. i hate having to say "im going back to school next year to be a crna or maybe med school" depending on how i feel. why do we get treated soooo bad.

another thing im upset about. i wasnt suppose to work today. management begged me to come in on my b-day to work only a half day and another nurse would do 1p -7p. you guessed it at 1 pm there was no nurse to relieve me. i stayed until 7 pm on my b-day when i wasnt even suppose to come in. management all of a sudden couldnt be reached! i felt so used and disrepected. has this ever happen to anyone. oh yeah the nurse who was scheduled to finish the day was still on orientation and couldnt come in. what should i do about this situation?????

Well, it's not allnurses.com that is depressing, it's some of our fellow nurses' job situations that are depressing!

I understand that in the first year of nursing, most of us will want to quit, or find it extremely difficult. We just have to resist the urge to quit nursing and move past it. You know, you don't read many post by experienced nurses asking how they will make it. This tells me that we will get there also, that we will survive.

I honestly am not treated badly by anyone at work (except one rogue pharmacist:angryfire ), so maybe it's your job environment. That's the best thing about nursing-we always have the ability to change our situation! So if it's not working out for you, change yourself, or change the situation, change fields, change hospitals....we can use this to our advantage.

Oh, and never answer the phone when it's work!

I dont think it is this website that is depressing to me, but how nurses themselves eat each other alive. I think it is NURSES who dont respect nurses, not people in general. I have been given nothing but respect from non-nurses for being a nurse.

Look at how we talk to each other "Oh, I am an RN, your an LPN, you're not really a nurse." Or I am a BSN, you're only an associate/diploma RN, your're not really a nurse"

The constant, "I am a nurse more than you are a nurse" is REDICULOUS, downgrading and sad. We are all in this field together right? Oh, and i think the one that really floored me was "Oh, psych nurses arent real nurses." :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire $#@%!@# STOP THE BULL PEOPLE!!!

As far as the other threads about people quitting: happens in EVERY job field, and those aren't typical. We'd really have a true nursing CRISIS on our hands if that was the norm, and NO ONE would go into nursing school.

Good luck to you, and I plan on going on for my BSN...so therefore i must like what I do :)

I will never, ever ,ever,ever, answer the phone again!! Is this how management operates. They trick people, lose there trust and wonder why 15 nurse quit in the past 8 months.

I don't think it's Allnurses that's depressing, it's what's happening to our Nurses that is depressing. We try, and try, and try to be the do all and end all of caring. And no matter how hard, perfection isn't achieved. I think having these forums is giving us (Nurses) a way of getting our side of the story out to the public. After all, this is the largest such forum in the WORLD. I would like it to be the voice of the "liitle nurse" (read: like the little man in the workplace)

i'm not depressed but my eyes hurt whenever someone uses bold type and two different font colors, lol!

Yeah, that reminds me of how much it hurts when people type in all caps, or maybe When People Type Like This All The Time. I can't read that!

I agree, there are many depressing threads on here about nursing. Seems like the only happy ones are from nursing students or nurses who are getting a new job.

Somedays I post I'm happy, some days I'm sad, and some days I'm mad as h*** whether it be work related or personal. the point is we all have something to say. Whether it be good or bad we are here for each other.

No matter what profession you go into there are bad aspects. Nursing is so versatile that if you're not happy you can always do something else. Not so with all professions. I was totally pooped from 31 years of hospital nursing, I'm now doing home health and it's completely different. I worked a short time in Radiology and thoroughly enjoyed it just couldn't get enough hours. It was taking very short histories (10 questions) and starting an IV.

I think Nursing is an awesomely versatile profession, you just have to work at finding your niche within the profession. :nuke:
