Nurses who wish you "hadn't" - other healthcare careers you wish you'd pursued?

Published

A question for those of you who regret (to whatever extent) choosing a nursing career - are there other healthcare careers you've observed that you wish you had pursued instead?

Tks!

How about Case Manager. They always leave notes in the chart, "Patient sleeping, did not want to disturb. Will check back tomorrow." ......Seriously?

I don't get it....is that not okay to chart? I'm a prenursing student.....?

If I could do it all again...DVM.

Ouch, all that schooling for 75K a year? I guess if you love it though. I think CRNA or PA sound like great fields.

I wish I would have gone for my MD. Oh well. Live and learn.. sometimes just too late.:sniff:

Well, alot depends on specialty and area. Equine vets in my area (very heavy equestrian area) make well over $100k, but they work like dogs for it. But, it is an area I love and I would do it for $75 if I had the opportunity :)

Yeah, DVM is definitely not something you go into for the money. :loveya:

I've been a pharmacy tech for over 15 years. I thought about going to pharmacy school, but every pharmacist I talked to told me not to do it! The money is awesome, but they are generally not very well respected and the hours suck, at least in retail. Plus, I can't stand chemistry. ;)

I don't know what the stress level is of the pharmacist, but as a tech, it is extremely stressful, especially in a really busy pharmacy. I will say that as a nursing student, my pharmacy background has helped me immensely. I'm graduating next week, and I can honestly say that I will not miss the field one bit.

Well, if you're a nurse, and you chart "patient sleeping, did not want to disturb for meds (or treatment, or assessment)" you'd get in serious trouble. But for case management (and OT, ST, PT...) that's okay. What I love is on our computerized documentation system, if you chart a med late you have to give a reason, and there is an option for "no time" but it's only for RT use!!

I did consider OT, and Rad tech before going to nursing school. The reason I chose nursing is because there seems to be so much more that you can do with it. I like working on the floor right now, but I'm also going to get my bachelor's (at least) to make sure if I burn out there will be other places I can go.

lab tech or rad tech. I like nursing, but I don't like how nursing staff is blamed for just about everything. Everything seems to be the nurses fault.
