Nurses Will Eat Anything

Have you ever heard or said that to a family member?

whats the weirdest thing someone has brought for you or your staff to eat?

I think the sickest thing was a patient brought some balout, the duck eggs........Well its sick to me anyways.......

We had a patient overnight some white castle burgers one time.........

We have a new nurse, from another country who eats this fish head soup every day for lunch. I know different cultures eat different things, but its the most foulest smelling stuff ive ever smelled. It fills the hall with an powerful rotten fish odor.

Can we tell her not to bring that anymore? I think its somewhat inappropriate due to its powerful smell. Nobody really knows what to do about this. We dont want to offend her or upset her by mentioning it. What do you do in this situation?

Gahhhhhh, sounds disgusting! Can you fake a couple of patient complaints? Not formal complaints, but just patients that mentioned the smell is making them nauseated? Would she get the hint?

Re: the fish soup smells....I always found that if a smell was strong enough to bother the nurses, it surely was annoying to patients as well. It can also help if eating is confined to a specific area. For everyone!

One nurse where I used to work brought in brownies. One of the other nurses grabbed one, took a big bite, and then she said (and I am not making this up)

"Aren't they good? I made them with my breast milk."

The nurse who was eating them promptly vomited in the garbage can. No one has ever eaten anything she brought in since.

I just do not understand the hoopla over Krispy Kreme's, I don't care for them at all.

Maybe that's why they are all closing around here. Dunkin Donuts are in every corner though.

re the fish head soup:

We had a coworker who always ordered out and our small health center would just fill with greasy pizza smells, or chinese food smell or whatever she had ordered. We are very small, there was no where to eat in our office but for a back room. (Yes she coulda gone to the cafeteria but why do that lol)

Anyway, the patients complained, staff griped about it not to her face. I spoke to my boss, she said we can't discipline someone for taking their lunch. Plus this woman worked for a different agency than us, so we had no recourse really.

Well the woman ordered fishfry one day and I swear, the place Reeked.

My coworker solved the problem (kinda crudely) by walking to that end of the office and announcing "Wow, it smells like someone has a terrible case of BV up here"

Things got much better after that.

Not that I advocate extreme measures. But it worked.

There was an issue with line staff not wanting to take separate breaks, so they'd eat in the offices. Then you'd be stuck with funky smells all afternoon (not to mention the slobs who left crumbs all over my desk, grrrr....) Luckily, since they also all ignored the phones when they were eating together, a hard and fast rule was passed- no lunch in the office. There is a woman who was routinely ignoring it. And she kept choosing our office to plant herself in. One day, I don't know what it was she was eating, but it was making me gag. I finally just said to her, "I'm sorry, but you know you're not supposed to be eating that in here, and it's making me ill". She hasn't eaten in my office since then. We also have an admin assistant who eats a dozen egg whites at 5 pm sharp every day. Luckily, he eats them in the break room down the hall, but unfortunately for people who work down there, it is part of the open space of a suite of offices. Most of them are long gone by 5 pm, but those of us who work later know better than to go in there after 5.

I know one thing that most nurses will not eat... Turkish Delight!! :chuckle Have any of you ever had this stuff? It's turkish candy, made with a jam-like substance and something like powdered sugar. There is a nurse that we work with who is always going on exotic trips, and one day she brought some to work from her trip to Turkey. It was NASTY!!! No one would eat it.

I think the big worry in confronting the nurses is the worry of offending her, and then her going to the other nurses of her race. We dont want to cause an uproar amongst them, as we have hired quite a few recently.

We have had a few cultural inservices lately. They were suppose to be patient based, but we know it was really due to all the foreign nurses being hired. We have a breakroom with a closed door, but the smell fills the entire floor.

That is so disgusting and disturbing.

She is cooking with bodily fluids!

I guess she wouldn't mind eating food which had been prepared with semen, urine, pus or lady partsl secretions, seeing these are also bodily fluids.

I am always amazed by the number of people that believe breast milk is this pure, sterile product.
