Okay, so, I have studied vaccinations rather intensely and have chosen not to get vaccinated.
When I went to my nursing school they mad dogged me about having my vaccinations up to date.
I know I can file a personal beliefs affidavit when I apply, but I'm nervous about being black listed since the program I plan on attending chooses students by lottery and there would be no way to know if I was blacklisted.
I'm also worried about eventually getting a job....will I be passed over because I don't have my vaccinations?
Has anybody gone threw this before?
Help!
Okay, first I apologize for all the "threw" monstrosities throughout my posts...autocorrct isn't all its cracked up to be.Second, please be kind, just because someone's opinion differs from yours doesn't mean that you should throw (catch that? I used the right word.updated my software!) Civility to the wind. Kindness please :-) I am not trying to attack you but seek your advice, maybe try to use that as an opurtunity to build others up by being constructive and honest without being brutal and rude.
Third, no, Mr. Wakefield isn't one of my "wise doctors" I personally do not agree with his "findings " (rather lets call it what it is, fraud in the medical world for financial gain). Not everyone who chooses an uncommon path follows a lunatic :-)
Fourth, studying for myself does not make me an idiot, but rather someone who is informed and constantly anylyzing the information that I receive. I do not lack intelligence, I graduated highschool at 15, and have not scored under 96% in my college work...so no, I am not unintelligent.
Thank you for your time and advice, as I said before, I will be getting vaccinated because I am choosing to care for others and part of that is laying down my desires so that I have the priviledge to care for those who are in need. I want to be a good nurse, providing comfort, support, and practical assistance, and a part of that includes being vaccinated.
Well said, and you're right autocorrect has issues.... That is the point. You are caring for those who are ill and you will have a large exposure to many communicable diseases and you will be at risk.......this is a case where the prevention outweighs the risk. Good Luck!
Another question on the subject of vaccinations - what about medical exceptions? I am starting nursing school this fall and I have been wondering about this. I was recently ill with both a virus and a serious bacterial infection. It took me about two years to become functioning again, and I'm still not 100% (but doing better every day!). I am due for a tdap, but my doctor feels that it is unsafe for me to get it right now. I took a CNA class over the summer and they were ok with me not getting vaccinations and just providing titers. All of my titers indicated that I still have immunity to everything the school is concerned about. Does anybody have experience with this type of thing? I'm getting a little worried reading this thread!
Immunizations and/or titers are REQUIRED in my nursing program. If you choose not to get the vaccinations, you simply will be denied admission to the program. End of story. The stringent requirements for vaccinations, etc., are due to our contracting clinical facilities' requirements. Nursing students are not allowed to go to clinical sites without the required vaccinations, PPD screen, up-to-date CPR certification, color-blind screen, criminal background check, etc., etc., etc.
I am hoping to be a nursing student very soon, as in this year. However, I think I may have hit a snag. I had my titers done, and I am not immune to the mumps. Due to medical reasons, I cannot have the MMR vaccine. Also, I can not have the live flu vaccine every year. I am waiting to hear from a school now on whether the facilities that I would do clinicals will take me without being vaccinated.
What if you have documentation from a doctor explaining that you cannot have the MMR or live flu vaccine due to medical reason? Will they still deny you?
For my program if you are unable (not unwilling) to have the vaccines/titers there are only a few options. If you are actually allergic to the flu vaccine (proof of egg allergy) then you must wear a mask the ENTIRE flu season in the hospital 24/7.
The other vaccines you can opt out by signing waivers and having your medical records sent to the school for reasons to not have a vaccine (previous reaction etc). So it IS possible to do nursing school without vaccines, but that's the beauty of herd immunity, those that CAN get vaccinated help to protect those that truly can't/shouldn't be vaccinated.
Thank you all for such helpful advice!I have decided to go ahead and get titers and vaccinations done...I'm not thrilled about it, but my desire to be a nurse greatly outweighs my desire to not be vaccinated.
I also do not want to be discriminated against based on beliefs, I want to help people and spread love threw nursing and I understand that will require many sacrifices...I guess its time to start making them.
No, my research did not involve Google, but many books, studies, and discussions with wise doctors who have written books and done studies on the subject.
Thank you everybody so much! Its such a blessing to learn from those who have already gone threw similar experiences.
I don't think you can really call that discriminating when you're putting people's lives on the line.
I had pertussis when I was 14 I'm pretty sure I got the shot (was it standard in 88?) but I know I didn't get a booster. In my school of about 200 kids there were only 40 left when I was done with them. The drs got a negative test the first time do they said I was faking it...not sure how I'm supposed to fake blue fingernails due to lack of oxygen... They ended up quarantining me, but it was too late and most of the kids in my school got sick too. I'm glad my classmates who were sick and I weren't around infants as it can be fatal! Get vaccinated!
I have an autoimmune condition where I cannot get vaccines. so after taking all the prerequisites and I'm starting to apply to nursing schools, I realized there was no school who is going to let me in . So I'm going to give up this path and pursue something else . I'm OK with it .. it just wasn't meant to be!
