Nurses with tattoos?

Does your facility have a policy on tattoos? Where I work the policy states that you can't have any tattoos visible that are "offensive". That's kind of vague wording to me lol. I have a small set of cherries on the back of my neck and no one has said anything so I guess that's not offensive. ;)

I also got a new tattoo this weekend. Here's a pic. I just had it done yesterday (it's my graduation/new job present to myself :redbeathe ). I had about 3 hours worth of work done and still have about 1-2 hours left. It's on my right calf which isn't visible at all at work which is good because I could see how someone might be offended by it even though I think it's beautiful :redpinkhe

I guess I'm from the old school-I always cringe when I see females with tats-ie the ones on the neck:eek: policy is that they need to be covered, that said it is a symbol for you of accomplishment-just be weary folks may take offense to the portral of a nurse in that way.

see above statement.

Here is one of our CURRENT intolerant policy makers. People took offense at female doctors and for that matter women that worked at all. They told them to be careful as they could be PORTRAYED badly. The old generations in this country have a nasty historical record of intolerance, but the good part is...these meatsacks we inhabit don't last too long, so change is inevitable. Rock that nurse tattoo and trust me, it will break more ice than it will set fires. You wear scrub pants to work anyway.

BaRNs I only wish I was a policy maker-tatoos would not be on my list of things to change in nursing:chuckle. In my orginal post I meant to state at the hospital I work at they have to be covered. Nothing having to with intolerance of females (I am one), I just felt that the OP should be prepared that some reactions may not be what she expected-there ARE portrayals of nurses that play to their being sex objects- example Halloween custumes, videos on youtube, even ads for shoes-there was one for sketchers a few years ago-that actually started a boycott of their product showing nurses in this way. That was all I was trying to say, you only get one chance to make a first impression on patients, coworkers, bosses etc-regeardless if it is right or wrong. Just my :twocents:

I have always loved tatoos, that said I also believe that there is sometimes too much of a good thing. For example a nurse with a small tastefull tattoo doesn't bother me, however a full sleeve would be unprofessional. I only have one tattoo that cannot be seen at work but that is more my wifes doing than mine, I have three more designs that I realy, realy want but the better half doesn't like tattoos or piercings or me having fun or... just joking on that last bit.

I have a design for my calf that I wanted as a celebration of my registration, it is a caduceus where the staff is made of a gnarled branch (like a walnut branch) decaying bird is coming to life and reaching out while the asps (so boring) have been changed into a pair of fighting cobras.

Maybe one day she will change her mind.

I love it- and honestly I love the whole sex kitten nurse thing as well. Growing up I always viewed most nurses as older, overweight, and crabby. I love that I can be young and sexy, and STILL be trusted to care for the many lives that are put in my hands.

Women can be both intelligent AND sexy...and I think we should embrace that!

EXACTLY! I'm fine with people looking at me like a hot sexy nurse, because, well I am gosh darn it!! :chuckle

It's funny because the thought of people being offended by the portrayal of a nurse as sexy never entered my mind. I mean, I figured some people might be offended by the partial nudity (if that's even what you want to call it) but offended by a sexy nurse? Interesting.

I LOVE IT!! Is it inspired by Olivia DeBerardinis' Bettie Page drawings?

YES! Specifically this one Nurse-Bettie-Poster-I10290025.jpeg :redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe My artist just added the legs and stool.

you know, i was going to do something similar to celebrate my graduation and while i was researching various images online i came across this website that you may find interesting. and for the record, further research proved this website to be true. http://drblayney.com/asclepius.html i found it quite ironic what the symbol actually represents and that the us is the only country to embrace it as a symbol for medicine.... that having been said, i have decided against getting it. as soon as i find a design of an asclepius that isn't so ugly, i will get that instead!

I love it and it will always be covered with scrubs...Where did you get the idea?

Thanks! The picture is a classic Bettie Page shot (not sure if people here know who she is or not). My artist added some things, like the legs and stool. She did such a good job!

Did the foot hurt? I've been thinking of getting one there.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance and I thought it was terrible! My calf was no big deal so I thought when I went back for my foot that it would hurt a little more but I never thought it would feel like it did! My husband said that he had never seen me look like that before. The outline was the worse part but the shading was no fun either. But it won't keep me from getting more tats and I love the stars on my foot. Actually...call me crazy...but I am thinking that my right foot is looking a little plain now so I may get something on it...at least now I know what to expect and how to prepare myself.
