I believe it is no employers business with what I do after work OFF duty. I have the right to smoke a joint if I want to. I'm a responsible adult MJ smoker and would never come into work stoned. Ever. I don't do any other drugs, drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes. I do a great job, love my patients, always arrive to work on time, do what I'm supposed to do as a health professional.
Testing positive for a drug does not suggest impairment. I think we can all agree on that fact.
Tip for other MJ smokers:
From what I understand it is better to refuse to take a drug test knowing you will test positive than actually take the test; because your license could be revoked.
Drug testing is a clear violation of our 4th amendment rights.
Am I for drug tests? Absolutely. Pre-employment and poor job performance. Random? No way.
I have no objection to other people safely and responsibly smoking pot (I live in Oregon; if I had issues with that I'm in the wrong state!), but the reality is that it's illegal and you can lose your job for it. If you have a problem with that, your best bet is to either not smoke or look for a different job. Or, when random drug testing busts you, man up and be responsible for your actions.
For as many pot-smoking people that I know (friends as well), it's a bit of a pet peeve for me, too....not getting into why, though.
OH YES....and I've never seen anyone refer to marijuana as "MJ". Makes me think you people are talking about Michael Jackson... :chuckle

I think that is what most of us are saying . . .. .
It is illegal.
You can lose your license.
Man up . ..

The illegality of pot is an outrageous waste of taxpayer funds and other resources. Until the stupid anti-pot laws are reversed, we just have to live with the frequent anti-pot hysteria.
Then work to change the law. But don't encourage nurses to break the law and smoke pot . . . . and no one here on this thread has been a part of anti-pot hysteria at least on this thread.
I think the discussion has been pointed towards logical consequences of disobeying a law when you have a nursing license.

If there are so many people in CA smoking pot legally, with an RX, then why isn't there a big problem with them getting into car accidents and beating their wives?I'll tell you why, because pot doesn't influence people to do those things. ETOH does.
Ok - anecdotal I realize but what about those two young men DRIVING A CAR erratically and being pulled over by a highway patrolman and found under the influence of mj with an RX? Getting pulled over fortunately before a car accident.
I'll have to search but I'm sure there is research about impaired people misbehaving.

Just cause they had a script doesnt apply. If they were driving dangerously...they are DUI...just like any other med would be that impairs the driver....:monkeydance:
Don't smoke pot, don't like pot. But I hate the drug testing crap and the whole BS industry built around drug testing. Do you think MD's or CEOs have to give hair samples or pee into a cup? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Most Drs. are weird any who...how can ya tell what is the cause?
