Positive ETG

Nurses Recovery

Published

I tested positive for ETG on December 22 2016. I have not had an alcoholic drink in a couple of years. However I did start drinking homemade Kombucha tea back at the end of last summer. I drink it for the probiotics and all the other benefits for the gut. I'm almost complete with my reinstatement process and now this happens! I am so scared that the Medical Review Officer is not going to believe me.

December 2015 I tested positive for ETG from eating Bourbon balls and having a glass of wine at my husbands Christmas Party. I had to start all over with my reinstatement then and I can not afford to have to do that again! Can anyone give me any advice or support since this has really gotten me in the dumps.

I don't know about Kombucha. Is it fermented in any way? Often products that undergo fermentation can result in a positive ETG. Did you just recently start drinking this if so it may be the cause. also what were your ETG numbers. I once tested positive after using PAM cooking spray which has grain alcohol in it as a dispersal agent. It was ultimately ruled an incidental exposure. Still I think the different states BON's react differently to positive ETG. You just have to hang on and be solid in your program of recovery.

Good luck

Kombucha is a fermented Tea. I've been drinking it since mid late summer. My ETG was 1750 (cut off 250) and ETS was 384 (cut off 75).

Hard to say what they might do if my experience is any indication they won't believe you. I surely wouldn't drink any more of that tea. Your numbers are not extremely high. When I was drinking I had an ETG of greater than 25000. Having already had an experience like this you are pretty much at their Mercy. You're going to have to go for an evaluation at the very least.

I imagine it varies depending on which program you are enrolled. A while back i tested positive for for etg and TPAPN did not believe me. I was referred back to the BON and now my license is flagged. But i have learned to put it behind me and I am much more careful. Fair ? No, but its not the end of the world.

Read labels and look into all food closely. Kumbacha at the store has warning labels that if you are staying away from alcohol you shouldn't drink it.

I am sending you good vibes.

Great article about kpmbucha tea. I wonder how many other products are labeled as non-alcoholic that have small amount of alcohol.

Soy sauce has around 2% but some brands can have a higher percent.

I just shake my head at all of the back flips we have to do to satisfy these idiotic, abusive programs. Alcohol in PAM? Really? i did not know that and would not have even thought about it. Yes I did just get up and go look at the can I have in the kitchen (grilling variety, too). it did not specifically say alcohol, but it does say stuff about containing a propellant and not to use near open flames. So the jump is logical. I wonder how much PAM I'd have to drink before it would be questioned? I see where fermented teas, non alcoholic beers, etc might be worthy of concern for those of us dealing with these programs idiocy, but the cutoffs for these tests, which mind you are not even FDA approved (read up on "laboratory developed tests) have been known to be so low that incidental exposure can be labeled "relapse" and the circus begins again.

I've never even been a drinker but the surreal roller coaster from hell that this crap has sent me on has me cringing even when I walk through the beer/wine aisle on the way to the frozen pizza (like I'm afraid of being seen in the general proximity.) i'm looking for a flipping Digiorno with extra cheese. Why the **** is IPN even in my head? This is just an example of the abuse we take at the hands of these money-making schemes.

There are just so many things out there that not even the most hard-core, would do anything to get their drunk on alcoholic with zero interest in stopping would not even think of. Cooking spray? Apparently yes.

I sent an email to the compliance coordinator at the KBN requesting for a detailed drug screen report from the ETG and ETS positives. An attorney for the KBN replied stating that according to KRS 61.878(1)(i), they are denying my request.

I talked with my primary doc today about it and she has offered to write a letter in hopes of helping me. I guess I'll wait now until a Mesical Review Officer contacts me!
