Nurses,if it ok to be scared of the hospital ER?

Published

i have hypertension and i always took my mothers B-blockers,but they ran out and yesterday i measured my bp on a wrist monitor and it was very high. i went to an inpatient clinic and the nurse there measured my bp 3 times and it was always in the 195s/99s. the resident there ordered a 12 lead and all it showed was supraventricular tachycardia, otherwise a normal ECG. but the nurse really really wanted me to go to the ER. i am somebody who gets very squeimish in hospital settings. even the thought of other people's injuries make me feel faint. when i refused, the nurse really pleaded with me and when i said no she looked at me as if though i needed to go to the psychiatric ward. would you nurses react the same way? people are scared of the ER and i am one of them. thanks!

Is it ok to be scared? Sure. But you're a nurse so you understand the dangers of your situation, so you need to put on your big girl panties and go take care of it.

OP is not a nurse, according to his previous posts.

according to all your postings, it does seem that you are asking for medical advice indirectly by asking hypothetical questions since it all seems related. we recommend that you do a research on your condition and go to your primary care physician for all your health related questions. this is simply because we do not know your medical history and we do not want to give you the wrong information. moderators, please monitor and close this thread.

thank you.

Are you afraid of doctor's offices? That is the appropriate place to seek care.

These sort of posts make me wish there were more stringent and enforced guidelines on joining the site.

ok,i do realize how a lot of the nurses on this forum object to my line of questions. i literally have no friends or family,i live alone, have nobody to talk to. i am afraid of blood and once when i heard of someone having a compound femoral fracture,i almost fainted. i admit,i am not your average person. my health is poor and i am only 30 yrs of age. i have always been scared of the hospital setting,i will have to find a way to get to the root of the my problems. i'm someone who would never seek legal action even if someone gave me bad advice, but i am not looking for it either. i just want to be rest assured that there are people who are also scared of the ER and scared of blood/injury. thanks to all the nurses who gave me honest answers.

Of course people are scared. Thats normal. But you can't let your fear get in the way of doing what needs to be done. You have to go get checked out. If your health is poor, then you are at risk. Get on top of your health by sucking it up and doing what you gotta do. Get thee to an ER. Fear is better than brain damaged or dead.

You stated your health is poor...the more the reason you have to go to your primary care provider for PREVENTIVE measures. Otherwise, if you neglect your health or ignore your doctor's advice you will eventually end up in the hospital; something that you are trying so hard to avoid.

It will also help if you also seek psychological advice...and I don't mean this in a sarcastic way.

nobody067, if you do not go to the doctor or nurse practitioner and have him or her assess your heart condition, you can die. You need medication that is prescribed for you by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on what they find when they examine you.

Take that medicine and cooperate with what the doctor or nurse practitioner says to do. I am telling you flat out that you are playing around with something dangerous. Hoping it will go away will not do you any good. You can't hide from it. Stop fooling around on a message board and go get it taken care of. You are lucky to be alive right now, because you did something really stupid when you refused to go to the emergency room. Stop being stupid, or you will get into trouble that no one can save you from. No one wants that to happen to you.

If you go to the emergency room, you will not see the injuries of other people. If someone is badly hurt, they are immediately taken into care. There is nothing for you to see, nothing for you to be afraid of.

Are you taking your psychiatric medications as prescribed? That can also help with anxiety. If you are not taking psychiatric medication, then you need to go to a doctor for that as well. You need help, more help than this message board can give you. Get into some kind of mental health care and let them help you with the problems you are having. It can be a real relief to talk to someone about your problems.

If you are taking your moms medication, what is she taking?

OK...I get being afraid of ERs.....I do. But how afraid are you of spending 25-35 years (or longer- worked at a place where a couple of residents had been there since the doors opened sometime decades earlier) in a nursing home after your stroke? I'm not saying that to be mean. Dying isn't always the worst thing- what about alert, and unable to speak, walk, or get yourself to the bathroom?

Were you asking if it is ok for lay people to be afraid of the ER? or if we, as nurses, are afraid of the ER? I am afraid I don't understand the actual point of your post.

In the meantime, the ER is not the place to be seeking treatment for conditions such as high blood pressure. This is usually considered a chronic condition. If it gets to the point where it would be acute enough to need emergent care, you would be in horrific danger of a stroke....and as xtxrn said...welcome to the nursing home for the rest of your life.

You need a doctor's office, NOT an emergency room, please go for a check up and medication.

mi vida loca..my mom was taking atenolol and diovan...diva - i was asking the nurses if it was ok for a patient to be scared of the ER. and now,i will have to go to the ER first thing in the morning..the left side of head hurts like someone is squeezing it and my whole head is so damn numb that i have to keep shaking it. it is tough living all alone and i really want to thank all the nurses for their support. i hope it is nothing serious,i am too scared to measure my bp now,but i will go to the ER.
