What is your thought on nurses who only join the profession for financial gains?

Let's all take a second to be real. If we were all independently wealthy, WE WOULD NOT BE WORKING AS NURSES. Not this profession, not full-time, not in anything where "caring" involves the degradation and abuse nurses are routinely subjected to. Many, probably most, of us, choose this career because we do like the idea of helping people, but if we didn't HAVE to do it this way, we'd probably move on to something more cushy.

I AM independently wealthy, and I do continue to work as a nurse. Your post above is correct in the respect that I don't work full time. But I work in a job where I am NEVER disrespected, much less "degraded and abused." I have in fact never worked anywhere where that was the culture. So even if I had to work full time where I am now, I'd be quite content. Not every nursing job is crap. You vote with your feet until you find the right fit.

My thoughts are that like those who join the profession for other reasons, they are great nurses, not so great nurses, or terrible nurses. It's highly individual, and not particularly influenced by primary motivation. As long as they are intelligent, conscientious, punctual, and dependable, I couldn't care less what motivation for entering and remaining in the profession they have.

Take away the paycheck and not a single one of us would show up on a volunteer basis.

I was thinking that if anyone was doing it strictly because it's a calling, they can send me their paycheck!

Yes maybe for you , but majority are doing it because they need the steady income.

As long as they are competent at performing their job, their motivation for going into nursing isn't my concern.

Of course that's true. But the post I responded to said it's always true, that NO ONE would work as a nurse if they didn't have to. That's simply false. I know other nurses who don't "have" to work, but they do because they enjoy it or find fulfillment from it. Saying that is not saying there is even one thing wrong with a person going into nursing for no other reason than the money. That reality seems to bother the OP.

I enjoy working part time, but even then, I've never felt nursing was a "calling." I enjoy aspects of it, and I like having a reason to get up and do something positive, but I've never personally bought into the "calling" thing.

So much interesting feedback on this topic. Thank you!

Okay, and that's exactly what you got. I'm not getting why you seemed to have such a problem with the fact that you got precisely what you asked for.

I wasn't available 4 days ago to read a long thread. My daughter got married so your little thread on nurses in it for the money wasn't a priority. I had time to read it today, so here I am. Does that answer your question?

Lots of threads are active for days, weeks, months.

Even though you started the thread, you don't have the authority to kill it or members' reactions to it, as long as they stay within TOS. Whether or not to kill a thread is not up to individual members, but to the mods here. They may close it in five minutes, five months, or never. I'm okay with any of those options, but of course it's not up to me either.
