Nurses and money.......

Published

I think it is interesting how many RNs I've worked with who have declared bankruptcy or are absolutely HORRIBLE with their money. They work so much overtime and incentive pay just to pay their bills and all of their debts. Anyone else see this?

We should have a list of financial books that have helped people or help with budgeting-that would be a positive spin on this post:nurse:

As for the decimation of the African American community it is absolutely more complex an issue then equating it to WELFARE!

Oaky, one more time. The African-American community: not decimated. NOT. We have issues but otherwise we are still here folks and I know some of you are disappointed but we are not going anywhere. We've come through worse. Many of us are thriving, hard to believe I know but........

Now back to the original topic.

Sharon,

I LOVED "The Millionaire next Door"!! I got it when it first came out in 1996 and refer to it throughout the year for inspiration ,etc.

I know this is hard for you to grasp since you support GOP nonsense

I support the GOP but don't support "nonsense"..................

I second the Suze Ormon recommendation. Her one piece of advice that sticks out in my memory:

"respect your money"

Meaning, keep it neatly, cleanly in one place, not scattered all over. You cannot know what you do or do not have if you have money scattered all over your purse/wallet and house. I found that particularly true.

Also like Sharon's book suggestion.

I will ask the participants of this thread to please stay on-track and refrain from making it a political mud-slinging opportunity. Thank you.

what nonsense are you referring to? The war on poverty was started by the Johnson administration

It is part of our society and it has taken me a long time to learn this. We are vastly influenced by marketing and the big companies know this! For example, I live in a rich county. When I meet someone new, the first thing they ask is what neighborhood I live in. Then they want to know where my kids go to school. In this county one is judged by the size of their home and which private school their children attend. I swear this is true. My girl friend who is all about keeping up with the Jones' just bought a 7 bedroom house. Her first question to me was "when are you moving in my neighborhood". I have not talked to her since. I refuse to be judged by the square footage of my house. Also you must have a lexus or mercedes. My husband looked around the parking lot one day and said "we are the only ones here that do not have a lexus or high end car" Whoopie, I thought and I do not have their payments, either! America is absolutely crazy!!!!

Holy Moly, how did this thread turn into a political debate?

I know many nurses and do not know of one who has filed bankruptcy. I'm sure they are out there, seeing as they are human and all and can make mistakes or have misfortunes fall on them just like the rest of the human population. Also, nurses aren't "rich" by a long stretch of the imagination and circumstances can bring them to hard times just as much as anyone else. Being a nurse doesn't guarantee financial success, it just gives a person a better chance at it than some other jobs.

You are SO right. It's all about choices....choices to NOT take on a bigger house payment or new car payments -even if you can "afford to". I have a friend who had a baby last year and COULD have chosen to just work very part time and be home with the baby if they had made do with their perfectly OK car and home. Instead, her family chose to buy a new car and bigger more expensive home. This requires that both parents now have to work full-time and pay out the nose for daycare. Basically, They are owned by the bank. A really great book to read on this subject is "Your Money or Your Life."

The book "Nickel and Dimed (On Not Getting By In America)" by Barbara Ehrnereich is a great book that covers some very interesting points on the topic of the working poor. Very interesting and a quick read ;) Many of the points brought up in this thread are discussed in the book.

I read "Nickel and Dimed" quite an eye opening book and thankful that I have a college education and a good job.
