I think it is interesting how many RNs I've worked with who have declared bankruptcy or are absolutely HORRIBLE with their money. They work so much overtime and incentive pay just to pay their bills and all of their debts. Anyone else see this?

I am a nursing student, not working in a hospital, so I don't know about nurses...but I think no matter which field you work in you will see this!

I have also seen people buying bigger houses, bigger cars and brand name clothes just because they started earning more money, instead of catching up on bills. It is just something about money, that makes people think they need more.

I think that this is a nationwide event and transcends gender, age, education and profession. Yes, I have seen nurses declare bankruptcy. But...in all fairness, I have seen more active duty couples have to do it because the wages paid to our military are a pittance at best. Up until my husband had been in the Air Force 15 years, we would have qualified for food stamps based on his income alone. Pretty sad...trauma steps off the soapbox).
I do see this in other professions.
My hubby is an Airline Pilot and when he got his major airline job in '99 we changed NOTHING, even though people thought we should buy a new house, cars, spend a lot of $$$,etc,etc............
my pilot hubby has been laid off 2 times in the past 3 years
we have 3 year old twins.......
good thing we can live off of just my salary and didn't listen to all of those other people.....................

The real problem is this fringe segment of our society which has hijacked our government (but will be ousted back into oblivion this November and next now that everyone can see what they are really all about) who are greedy, self-serving, corrupt, and completely insensitive to the plight of their fellow man.
They all tell a "pulled myself up by the bootstraps" story, but if you do a little digging you see that most of them inherited (in one way or another) most of what they have.
God forbid one of these vile "people" becomes a nurse.

You will see people that have had million dollar incomes and still manage to squander it all. It happens across all economic lines. Nurses are human too...

I tend to agree across all economic lines but I see this alot with upper level wage earners. Some people will even max out credit cards in anticipation of filing bankruptcy
I'm not sure what the insensitivity is? We spend billions on welfare, food stamps, higher education (which are the biggest defaulters to the federal government), God forbid someone stands up and says the war on poverty is an utter failure they are called cruel, heartless, a bigot and many other choice words. Once they abolish the income tax and replace it with a consumption tax or a wealth tax then you will see the rich trust fund politicians come out kicking and screaming against taxes on the rich.

The war on poverty is underfunded and it always has been! The War on Drugs is also a COMPLETE failure, well funded but since it only targets the poor, the GOP has no problem thinking that is going well (similar to all other Wars they declare)! :angryfire
I personally would rather spend money (my taxes) to feed the poor! I agree that there needs to be no taxes on income and more on consumer goods that are not needed for basic survival.
I agree with others that it is not just nurses. The biggest problem our society has is that most people do not live on a budget. They find it too restrictive and unfair. So most households do not pay attention to how much money is needed to survive and pay bills and how much is needed to enjoy. The only people who benefit from a Country of non-savers and over spenders are those who make money giving credit!

I heard that Trauma! Same here. If not for the benefits, it would be ugly.
